Screenwriting is scenework. You need great scenes. Kick-ass, emotional, hilarious, horrifying, sexy, romantic scenes. So many screenplays just go along. Something happens. Then something else. And then something after that. Stop doing this. Worry less about the plot. The plot is just an excuse to put great characters into great scenes. Write those scenes!

At least 30 agents rejected me in the 90 days before my first screenwriting agent reached out to me on his own. He cold-called me after a stage play I wrote and self-produced got a nice review in a Houston paper. He called ME. When I reached out to agents myself... crickets. When I just went ahead and did what I do, CAA came to me. It isn't magic. And it certainly isn't automatic. It is very much a right time and right place with a lot of luck involved. But that luck comes from creating. We are creators. Sitting around and waiting for someone to discover your brilliance will get you nowhere. Soon, you'll be complaining and then angry and bitter. We have to get out there and create. Build community, build relationships. Do something that makes them come to you. Attract rather than chase. There are endless ways to start a screenwriting career, but they all start with you creating something rather than sitting around.

@dorafwrites No I agree. It's a risk for sure. But I do think the bigger risk is not writing the story you want to write. At least you get to develop your voice. I'm not at all strategic - that's probably not a good thing!

@J_MartinEdwards I think the point about developing your craft is so spot on. But the other risk, I guess, is that you don’t know whether ‘the story you want to write’ will be one anyone wants to pick up - and you’ve spent such a big chunk of time on it. Still, on balance I agree :)

Scripts have a much better chance of being picked up, but are also far more work than a pitch for approx the same option fee. So do I write a bunch of pitches this year and play the numbers game, or try to write one more strong script? Answers on a postcard pls ☺️

Some really great insights from @daniyellegoff on the pitfalls and the pleasures of making short films. And thanks @bfinetwork for organising!
