Whatever momentum Colorado State’s season had is gone. That’s what a deflating loss by a team and staff that clearly hasn’t learned from its previous mistakes does. UNLV has a great record and a solid future with Barry Odom. But their SoS of 113 is one of the worst in college football, and the 6-1 Rebels don’t have a win over a program with a winning record. If you’re a Colorado State fan walking away from that not feeling embarrassed by handing victory to UNLV the same way CSU did to CU, I have to ask … why? What is the moral victory here? What’s there to be encouraged by? The Rams sat back with 40 seconds left and just let UNLV work the field with open receivers to win the game on a chip shot. In Boulder, CSU’s secondary sat back and let the Buffs go the length of the field using a similar playbook go force OT. How is that not embarrassing? The only reason to be encouraged by a 2-point loss when being an 8-point underdog is if you bet against the spread. I can’t understand justifying a moral victory for a program that got its fan base’s hopes up a week ago, just to turn around and come out flat. That’s what this program has been for a half decade, and to me, at this point, accepting that is complacency. A bowl isn’t out of reach for this program — CSU still plays New Mexico, Hawaii and San Diego State —but with an Air Force team that’s angling for a NY6 bowl coming to Fort Collins next week, this was a game the Rams needed to win to keep confidence high and fans engaged for a potentially wet kickoff 7 days from now. If you want to say “embarrassing” is an overreaction to a squib kick and allowing a team to easily go 56 yards in 40 seconds to win the game, that’s fine. But after so many years of a program failing to hold people’s attention, I’m curious how else to describe it.
