The frequency of “administrative errors” resulting in deportations, often to the wrong country, gives every reason to be cautious, if not fearful. I’ve always wanted to visit El Salvador, but I’ll pay for my own flight, thanks.

At the end of the day, we need the police. We need them to be robust, constitutional, & intelligently led. Those who commit violent acts must be held accountable. Do I think we could revamp our efforts to tackle violence? Yes. Do I think the Feds are the ones to do it? No.

Yes, crime in DC is a persistent issue—as is homelessness and poverty. While crime has fallen from record highs, we shouldn’t downplay that while rebuking Trump’s federal takeover of MPD.

This is an important point, I think. MPD is under federal control, but how does that actually work? And while Trump said he'd favor "rough" policing, do D.C. laws and police regulations on conduct still apply? There's lots of logistical uncertainties here.

I just got back from DC and the most striking thing was how quiet and empty it seemed compared to a year ago. There were still sings of life in certain areas, but much more subdued compared to when I lived there. Not sure what this means necessarily. Just an observation.
