@AmelieRaz 😳🙈 Maybe my new FISH method will finally provide support my crazy-great hypotheses...

With this sequencing, we can better define the spermatid "transcriptome" and start to study the really fascinating interplay between which RNAs are transcribed earlier and perdure vs. which are transcribed post-meiosis and, most intriguingly, why.

Post-meiotic cells have been thought to be almost entirely transcriptionally silent. However, single-nucleus RNA seq shows that post-meiotic transcription is much more prevalent than previously appreciated. We've identified >150 genes with expression enriched in spermatids. 🤯

So excited to share the results of what has been an amazing collaboration amongst so many incredible labs in the fly testis field. It was my first experience working with sequencing data and I learned so much! See 🔽 for my favorite part. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

This was such a fun collaboration! Post-transcriptional regulation in spermiogenesis is fascinating and the more we delve in to it, the more really interesting things we find and the more questions we uncover. Thread ⬇️

Happy to share our new preprint, now on BioRxiv! Eukaryotic translation initiation factor eIF4E-5 is required for spermiogenesis in Drosophila melanogaster | bioRxiv biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

@ravenscimaven I’m a grad student studying Drosophila spermatogenesis, and I’m also a sci-fi writer. I dream of the day I see one of my novels published.

So excited that the second half of my PhD work is out! I first observed these RNP granules fairly early in my PhD and I've been determined to figure out more about them. Turns out they're important for the assembly of the fly's 2mm long sperm!
Journal of Cell Biology@JCellBiol

Fingerhut (@JaclynFingerhut) and Yamashita (@yamashitaflylab) show that localization of a novel RNP granule containing axonemal #dynein mRNAs facilitates incorporation of these axonemal proteins, promoting cytoplasmic #cilia formation. bit.ly/32Pcen5

.@UMich @DrMarkSchlissel with many staff working at home, on-line classes, and K-12 schools closed, why keep campus parking gated? Shouldn't we be reducing congestion on shuttles/public transit right now? Keep those of us still working on campus as safe as possible.

@el_jensay If this is the survey I think it is, I actually commented on mine that assuming everyone wants to start a family is false and that they should be more cognizant of these differences considering what they are trying to assess.

So excited to see some of my thesis work available as a preprint! I’m looking at the expression of REALLY large genes that have intons with megabases of satellite DNA repeats! biorxiv.org/content/early/…

@yamashitaflylab @sbarolo As the aforementioned grad student, I agree. This was a nice opportunity. To know beforehand that this would be part of the committee meeting would provide opportunity to reflect on whether mentorship needs are being met as well as get feedback and advice for when they are not.

@sbarolo Scott, we should do this. They seemed to like it (of course I didn't get to hear what they talked about). Having some time during thesis committee meeting when the student and the committee members talk without the PI.

At my student’s committee meeting now. And I just remembered some institutes take sometime when the PI leaves the room so that student can discuss anything with the committee members. Our program is not doing it but I thought this is a good experiment. So I’m out of the room now.
