My review for Project Hail Mary at the Hyperreal Film Journal is live, a review in which I wrestle with the fact that while this movie is very good, some of the more rapturous reactions to it feel like a symptom of the current blockbuster landscape: hyperrealfilm.club/reviews/projec…

Like, I think Project Hail Mary is good, not great (gave it four stars on Letterboxd), and I found myself musing on the Soy Cuba debacle before I watched the movie at a preview screening. It didn't really affect my appraisal of Project Hail Mary, but it's in the back of my head.

@VyceVictus Like, the Afroman verdict absolutely rocks and is hilarious, but the second you spot in any celebrity's bio that they're "running for President" (as in the case of Afroman) you can reasonably assume their politics are going to kind of suck in one way or another.

@girldrawsghosts You're welcome! One other nice thing I will say about it is that there's a constant overlay of a Twitch-style chat in the corner of the screen, and whoever wrote all of that text actually did a good job capturing what those live-chats are like. Otherwise, I found it unwatchable.

@JacobTalks4ever This actually gives me a lot of insight into it. Kind of confirms the picture i was getting in my head. Thank you for taking the time to reply

Speaking of digital horror infants did anyone see Baby Invasion? Came out like two years ago and I’ve never seen anyone really talk about it. I think the premise is super interesting, but, you know, it’s Harmony Korine. So. Is it even worth bothering with

@girldrawsghosts The only reason I didn't get up and flee was because of the music. One of the worst experiences I've ever had watching a movie at Fantastic Fest in my life so far, though I do know people personally who will go to bat for it. YMMV.

@girldrawsghosts I think if you saw Baby Invasion as a room in an art gallery with good speakers, it would be a very cool installation to walk in and out of (the music by Burial is phenomenal). As a theatrical experience where I had to sit in a theater and watch it, I *hated* it.

I completely forgot about this bullshit lawsuit awhile ago, so finding out Afroman won fucking rocks. Between this verdict and the “TikTok Psychic” verdict, it’s been a good few weeks for the U.S. legal system (miraculously) functioning well.
philip lewis@Phil_Lewis_

Afroman won a jury verdict clearing him of wrongdoing in a lawsuit filed by police who raided Afroman's home, then sued him after they claimed he defamed them by ridiculing them on social media billboard.com/pro/afroman-tr…

Never could have imagined 25 years ago that “Victory for Afroman over the Sheriff’s department” would be such a crucially important symbolic statement for our nation

Victory for Afroman over the sheriff's deputies who sued him for defamation and invasion of privacy through false light. "In all circumstances, the jury finds in favor of the defendant. No plaintiff verdict prevailed. So the matter will be concluded with defense verdicts."

@_anthonynash I think the smaller one behind Scytale is Hayt, but this larger one looks like Edric to my eye. I seem to recall that Hayt is first introduced in a human-sized pod, but I don't know if I'm remembering the book or the Sci-Fi channel Children of Dune mini-series lol

@JacobTalks4ever It's definitely either Edric or Hayt, could see an argument for the latter but a lot of the colors are similar to what Denis used for the Guild in the first movie

I have to say this now: Even if I walk out of Dune: Part Three and love it in every single aspect possible that you can grade a movie on to the fullest BUT they leave Edric out of the movie, that's an automatic star reduction on Letterboxd. I need him, or at least *a* Navigator.

I have complex feelings about Villeneuve's adaptations so far, (they're mostly good!) but the one thing I truly love about them so far are the ways in which he's reconfigured the tone of the first book to match Messiah's bleakness. Looks like that's going to pay off in spades.

Ever since Dune: Part Two, I've had a theory that Denis Villeneuve mostly adapted the first Dune book *just* so he could adapt Dune: Messiah (which is the material he's actually interested in), and the last bit about this being his most "personal" film kind of confirms that.
Film Updates@FilmUpdates

Denis Villeneuve on ‘DUNE: PART THREE’ • Shot on 65mm film except for the desert scenes, shot on digital for the IMAX experience. • Hans Zimmer’s score will feel very different from his previous ones. • Describes it as his most personal film.

@Srirachachau @MatthewFerrari I don't say this lightly, especially in the context of "Film Twitter" over the past years, but that "Libs of TikTok horror" take is the most severe example of projecting personal biases onto a movie I have ever seen, some legit Jungian-shadow shit.

...even if you find the visual "upgrade" impressive with this technology, how the fuck does it map onto games with graphical styles that aren't chasing hyper-realism? Like, what does this shit do for the likes of Hi-Fi Rush, or any game with stylized art direction?

I liked SENTIMENTAL VALUE but it stings that THE SECRET AGENT and IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT couldn't actually win; I guess the AMPAS will always go for the feel-good movie about how art can heal rather than two of the most politically confrontational movies of the year.
