SOURCE: Guardians traded for Patrick Bailey out of fear that Austin Hedges might become “too expensive to re-sign now that he has actually learned how to hit a baseball”

@DetroitTankCity A three-out gap is not massive. It’s a 14% difference. Certainly possible to overlook when one starter allows fewer runs per inning. fWAR pegs Skubal at about 12.6 WAR whereas Verlander’s best two-year stretch is 13.4

@JacobsFieldRBW It's only "tough to justify keeping Skubal" because the Tigers will almost certainly then lose him in the off-season and get a nothing but a draft pick. Not for any other reason, at least in my opinion.

Justin Verlander, 2016: 6.2 IP per start Tarik Skubal, 2025: 6.1 IP per start I think some of the old timers on this app just genuinely don’t remember the game they were watching 10 years ago.

@DetroitTankCity It is. It is, however, not so much more impressive than 6.1 with a better ERA and strikeout rate. Especially not to an extent that makes it “tough to justify keeping Skubal”. Make sense?

@mrbrownie_elf @JacobsFieldRBW All but 1 hitter from the last draft are now a AA, and we notably drafted for power over hit last year. Carceres is the youngest player weve promoted to high A in a very long time, hes only 18. Rosario is another power over hit guy, we got him for Eli morgan.

Sure, your point is valid. And if OP had said this, there would have been no reason to disagree. The problem is that OP exaggerated the difference in innings pitched per start as an argument for why Skubal isn’t valuable enough to keep. During the last two seasons, Skubal averaged 6.1 innings per start. Even peak MVP Verlander “only” averaged about 7.1, and was usually below 7. So yeah he generally went deeper into games, but Skubal gives the Tigers higher quality innings than Verlander ever did, so it’s ridiculous to say that Skubal is less valuable than Verlander to the point where it’s not worth keeping him.

@JacobsFieldRBW JV and Skubal may be comparable in stuff and greatness, but they are not particularly comparable in lasting in games. That to a big extent involves different eras and different philosophies about what starting pitchers do. But that doesn't explain 100% of it.

@IffyTheDopester @papatigermike @JacobsFieldRBW Still a major issue I have. Juan Berenguer by this though process would be worth 40 mil a year. Analytics has ruined the sport for me If this is the case. Then the tigers shouldn’t care about resigning skubal and letting stars walk since their way is the smartest

You can’t even keep track of your own argument and it shows with you constantly moving the goalposts. Your original claim was that it’s tough to justify keeping Skubal because prime Verlander threw marginally more innings per start than prime Skubal, but prime Skubal gives you better quality innings which is why both have similar WAR during their primes. Try to keep your boomer ass focused and maybe you’ll make more sense.

Again — You missed the point entirely, which is why I had to spell it out for you. At this stage in their careers Verlander — in the same amount of seasons — had already thrown 473 (473!!!!!!!!) more innings than Skubal. That’s 2.5 more seasons of innings even if I’m giving you Skubal’s career high of 195 as the average. You also conveniently used Skubal’s numbers for the 2025 Cy Young season and not the current season and now want to use that same exercise against me haha. Clown. My only point was JV was the definition of a work horse. Full stop and couldn’t disagree more if you’re trying to put Skubal in that same category. Just isn’t reality. Both awesome pitchers. This isn’t even a hot take. Again you can’t in good faith look at their innings pitched and try to argue it’s the same. You’d lose every time.
