Calling Krypto *was* a creative solution. He worsens the situation almost every time with his jumpiness, but Superman uses that to his advantage against Ultraman.

I like Gunn's Superman is a bit weaker than other iterations –– it builds stakes and make him more human. But to me, that's an opportunity for Supes to find creative ways to solve problems, not for a bunch of side-characters to bail him out of his own movie almost every time

An example of James G*nn’s really poor writing: we are repeatedly told that Clark and Lois have been dating for only 3 months and are still getting to know each other. After Clark tells Lois he loves her, he says “I should have told you that a long time ago”.
