I thought about this yesterday and it occurred to me that I gave my ex good advice. When we met, he was very determined to become his own boss and kept rejecting job offers. I told him to pause and take a job first. A job teaches you process and systems, and it also provides a cushion when things go wrong. If you know your onions, you learn a lot about management while working for someone else. You also begin to see industry pitfalls and understand better where to invest your time and money. In short, a 9–5 can position you to understand your industry better before going fully on your own. Thankfully, he listened and he is better for it.

people underestimate how much corporate teaches you. systems, structure, how decisions get made at scale, what bad leadership costs a company. you learn all of that on someone else’s budget before you risk your own.
