Player onboarding in Marathon is rough and needs so much work! By hour 5-10 and beyond the game really clicks and only gets better from my experience but the onramp feels like an uphill battle with a basic tutorial that teaches you nothing about the games depth which is why I don't blame players for jumping ship early. I hate the ARC Raiders comparison because yes, the two games share the same genre but Casual players didn't buy ARC because it's an "Extraction Shooter". Embark found a way to make it so much more accessible, understandable and tailored to the players needs with aggression based matchmaking. More than anything we've seen from the genre before, making it easy to learn and allowing for mastery of its mechanics achievable to the masses! Marathon is the exact opposite and throws you in at the deep end. It's hard to learn and hard to master with a significantly larger skill gap and will simply never succeed at hooking players the same way ARC Raiders did because Marathon appeals to such a niche audience comparatively. That niche is clearly loving it based on reviews but anybody looking in from the outside and not wanting to fork over their $40 to find out for themselves simply cannot see the appeal and that's the fault of the game. Not the players who pushed through that wall and are now enjoying the experience.
