Black Sabbath - Iron Man
The idea came about when Ozzy Osbourne heard Tony Iommi’s heavy riff and remarked something like “it sounds like an iron bloke walking” or “an iron guy,” suggesting they write a song called “Iron Man” or “Iron Bloke.”
Geezer Butler, the bassist and lyricist, took that phrase and turned it into a science fiction story. The lyrics tell how a man travels to the future, witnesses the apocalypse, and returns to the present to warn humanity. On the way back, he passes through a magnetic field that transforms him into a mute, monstrous iron creature. People ignore him, mock him, and reject him. Filled with rage and resentment, the Iron Man then decides to bring about the end of the world he had seen himself, turning his warning into a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Butler has clarified several times that the song has nothing to do with the Marvel superhero of the same name, since he didn’t read American comic books at the time. He also mentioned that, on a deeper level, the story is an allegory about Jesus Christ: a savior who is rejected and persecuted, but instead of forgiving, seeks revenge.
The song was recorded in a single take by the band in the studio and became one of heavy metal’s most iconic classics.
