As a father of a child with SEND, I know how important it is every child gets the support they need to thrive. Reform is needed, but as the King’s Speech sets out changes to the system, we must make sure we get this right for families. This piece from Rory Bremner shows exactly why: independent.co.uk/voices/rory-br…

Bradford matters. Demographically, it is the youngest city in Europe. The scene of the worst sectarian riots in Britain this century. Under Labour, it became a test-bed for a policy of multiculturalism which insisted all cultures and languages were of equal value. That policy has been a disaster for a city which, 150 years ago, was one of England's most prosperous. More than anywhere else in Britain, Bradford exemplifies the incompatibility of 'Baradari' kinship networks with Western freedoms. It is why the city has the highest incidence of first-cousin marriage in the UK, with the worst rates of birth abnormalities, as a result. It was where, in 1989, a novel written by Salman Rushdie - and deemed 'blasphemous' by Iran - was publicly burned by a mob outside the city hall. It was a seminal moment: when the British State chose not to stand up for the right to offend. Bradford is a city where the white working class has been routinely ignored, caricatured as racist and pushed into ever-shrinking ethnic enclaves. Labour deserved to lose power in Bradford. The pity is that they didn't lose it decades ago. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

Days before crunch local elections William Hill confirms its closing 270 shops - in part because of the Govt’s thumping tax raid, one cheered on by a number of MPs. And on the very day trading standards reveal the extent of organised crime on our high streets

No other major European country imposes VAT on education. More than 100 independent schools have now gone under in Britain since Labour decided it would do so. Ideological vandalism.
Victoria@vickygrayson_

“It is with great sadness that Malvern St James is proposing to close at the end of this academic year. Nationally, the introduction of VAT on private school fees & increased employment costs have placed considerable pressure on the independent sector.” malverngazette.co.uk/news/26045586.…

We keep being told how “angry” and “furious” Keir Starmer feels. This is all a piece with the infantilisation of politics. Anger is a juvenile response to events, an emotion better-suited to the playground than Parliament. It suggests a loss-of-control; an impression the PM would do better to avoid.

At a @CommonsForeign session in November 2025, I directly asked Sir Oliver Robbins whether the FCDO had a different view of who should be recommended for the posting of US Ambassador. His response? "It was clear that the Prime Minister wanted to make this appointment himself."

Mmm.. Sir Olly Robbins (full name: Sir Oliver Robbins) joined the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) as Permanent Under-Secretary (the most senior civil servant role, also Head of the Diplomatic Service) on 8th January 2025. But Mandelson's pass said 6th January!
