After more than two years of negotiations, we can finally say it: @NYTimesGuild and @nytimes have reached a tentative agreement on a groundbreaking new collective bargaining agreement.

It's a very bad look for New York Times management that its CEO has received a 73% pay increase over the past two years while the Times is offering a wage increase far below inflation to the 1,000+ journalists who make the Times the great news organization that it is

The @nytimes recently disclosed the latest compensation packages for our top executives. Among the highlights: Our C.E.O., @meredith_levien, was paid $7.6 million in 2022, up from $4.4 million in 2020. That’s a 73% increase.

After seven great years at the NY Times, I resigned last week to pursue an exciting new project, to be announced soon. But I wanted to share a bit about why I left what had been my dream job since my days at the student paper.

In an all-hands today, our C.E.O. said it would be irresponsible to use the $250 million the company just authorized in buybacks for Guild salaries because the costs would compound. Barely a third of that would cover the Guild’s economic proposals over the life of the contract.

Some #s for contrast: -The $65,000 salary floor we're seeking for all Guild members would cost the company less than $1 million a year more -Our CEO's RAISE last year was $1.4 million. Her *raise* alone would pay for that $65,000 salary floor.

Today NYT announced it has authorized $400 million in stock buybacks for shareholders. Meanwhile the company is fighting against a $65k minimum salary for its employees in union contract negotiations 👀 nytimes.com/2023/02/08/bus…

A news alert with my name on it just went out. It was a pre-written story ahead of an expected vote. I stand with the guild.

Meredith Kopit Levien, the CEO of the @nytimes, was paid $5.8 million in 2021, up from $4.4 million in 2020. Meanwhile, management has offered @NYTimesGuild employees a paltry raise (which, in light of inflation, amounts to a pay cut) and fought against a $65,000 minimum salary.

There's something about this form that makes people act so ugly, but the NYT is not just journalists. We're striking for our lower paid colleagues, those who put out the paper, our security guards, our news assistants. That is the point of COLLECTIVE actions. We fight together.

If you see someone's name on a story on Thursday or Friday, it does not necessarily mean they crossed the picket line to write it. Newspapers often have reporters write portions of stories ahead of time when possible.

There was good news and bad news after 12 hours of bargaining yesterday. Our collective action is working: Management backed off its attempt to kill our pension and agreed to expand fertility benefits.

If @NYTimesGuild members don't have a deal soon, we’re asking readers to not engage in any @nytimes platforms tomorrow and stand with us on the digital picket line! Read local news. Listen to public radio. Pull out a cookbook. Break your Wordle streak.

We want our pension intact. We want our health care funded. We want raises that reflect our contribution to the company's success. I pledge to walk out with more than 1,000 @NYTimesGuild members for a fair and complete contract.
