Nick Saban - Rip/Liz Match - 1 High Man Match Cover 3 (Strong Rotation) or Cover 6 (Weak Rotation) Corners - Responsible for #1 unless short or under within the first 5 yards. - If #1 is short within the first 5 yards, CB gives a smash call to the curl flat player & matches #2 vertical. Flat Defenders - If your man is vertical in the seam, then you match him. - If your man goes under, make an under call and zone off to the curl flat. - Come off #2 vertical and match #1 short if you get a smash call from the corner. - Come off #2 vertical versus a fast #3. "We're playing zone versus a fast 3." Hook Defenders - Must take #3 thru unless given an under call. - Saban started running Rip/Liz after 1994 in order to deal with the vertical seams + out route combinations vs 3 Deep Zone (lost 3 games to the Pittsburgh Steelers).

Seattle Seahawks HC Mike Macdonald - Defending Buck Sweep/Pin & Pull - "Anytime they're pulling guys... I'm either thinking create singles, create overlap & width of the defense. Or I'm thinking plug it up the middle with some sort of run through. If they want to pull guys all day long, well shoot just plug a guy, you might just run dang near right through there."

Texas A&M HC Mike Elko - Defending Athletic QBs on 3rd Down - 5-0 Front / 5 Man Rush / Cover 1 Structure - Edges use up & under technique, Nose pushes the pocket, force QB to escape vs Double C Gap spies. - "You guys certainly see this at the HS level, we see it sometimes too, his feet are way more dangerous than his arm. The biggest thing I've got to do, is I've got to not let this kid run." - "The more that gets distorted between arm & feet, however you've got to do it, don't let him beat you with his feet."

Nick Saban - Defending 11P Y Off RPOs - "Well look, if your cats are better than their cats, play man to man. You got one more guy in the box than they can block, you got an 8 man front & you got all the RPOs covered." - "Probably the best way to play it if you want to play the RPOs is you have to play some kind of split safety coverage. The simplest front to play it, with the least adjustments because you're forcing the ball inside out is to play what we call Mint 4 Mod (0 Nose/DBL 4i). You're playing quarters with safeties that can fit the runs and hold on the RPOs." - "If you're going to play a 4-2, then to me if you want to play split safeties, you have to cancel gaps some type of way. You got to jam a side away from the back, pirate a side away from the back."
