In the year 2026 there are still people who think that medieval nobles would undertake extreme risk, expense, and months of travel in order to "conquer" foreign lands that they would be unable to administer or draw any wealth from, simultaneously with their previous holdings, in order to.... enrich themselves? If you read the most minimal amount of medieval history you would realize this is not a video game and a logistical near-impossibility (which they all knew). Anyone who had the wealth to "conquer" lands a thousand miles away would be better served leveraging all that force on his richest, most belligerent neighbor, who he could easily administer and despoil once all the conquering had happened. Just think about it for a moment. Let's say a minor noble from southern France is going on crusade. First of all, his liege lord is going to get the spoils. But lets say he gets a castle in the Holy Land.. now what? He's going to somehow govern his castle in the Holy land and his castle(s) in southern France at the same time? How? With a month or two travel between places and both surrounded by potential hostiles at any time.. what's the play here? It is logistically ridiculous. The medievals knew this. After any given crusade, no matter how successful, almost all of them went back home. The financial prospects here would be like reverse-mortgaging your house in order to start a food truck in a foreign (less-well-off, equally or more violent) country. That's your big plan to get rich? Makes no sense.
