"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies... those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - CS Lewis

Electricity demand for appliances and electric transport is growing faster than data center electricity demand. Kinda convenient how proponents of gas stove bans and EV mandates are blaming data centers for higher energy prices, isn't it?

Important comments from Mr. Wonderful (@kevinolearytv) here about data centers. Technology is changing the equation rapidly, so what we thought 12 months ago might be different than what is being realized on the ground in the upcoming months and years. I don't say that to defend data centers, and as @johnrich notes in the comments - we need to protect our farmland and ag production in this state and country. At the end of the day, let's make sure we're being honest and rational as we evaluate these large-scale developments. There's a right way and a wrong way to proceed, and there are certain areas that will be better suited than others.
Kevin O'Leary aka Mr. Wonderful@kevinolearytv

I’m the only developer of data centers on earth that graduated from environmental studies. I'm pretty aware of what these concerns are. They are around air, water use, heat, noise pollution. So sustainability is at the heart of what we do in terms of all these proposals. We search for the best technology. There's many air-cooled turbines now, so you're blending in air-cooled versus water. There's so many different ways to generate power. We can also put a percentage of the power generation through solar, wind, and batteries because the battery technology is 10X more efficient than it was just five years ago. So that's very helpful because it makes the cost of energy lower.

"Datacenters use a lot of water" is true. It's also the sentence winning Texas permit fights without telling anyone whether the facility on the agenda will leave the basin with more water in it, or less. Two operating Texas datacenters show the spread: 🧵

The misleading "datacenters use lots of water" won some permit fights. But the details on a project make all the difference. Texas leaders know to consider all of what matters. With datacenter developments, that's the level of conversation we need to have. Ask the right ?s.

ProTip: IMHO lobbyists who trash the top lege priority next session with their secret dinners should remember that the system works both ways... unless they only have taxpayer funded clients they should get on board or their other clients might just drop your firm. #txlege
