@CherieE13109447 No problem. When unpacking the affixes (prefixes and suffixes) these would be best done one or a few at a time, so you can find other examples of its use in context and hypothesis about the function of the prefix of suffix. Suffixing rules are another set of things to unpack.

#ELLSAPD here are two wall displays I’ve created to support students’ understanding of word structure. It’s been amazing to see kids using the digraph chart to identify sounds.

English

@CherieE13109447 As a teaching tool, the aim (in my mind) would be to reference these as anchor thinking charts in context of any lesson (with intention) throughout the day. Perhaps not adding every word to the class version. Maybe some might use a nindividual reference folder system or something
English

@CherieE13109447 Hi Cherie. So glad you came along yesterday. Apart from a wall display, we use the digraph tool in HR when conferring into how students might spell base words while they are writing, identifying unigraphs, digraphs, trigraphs and consonant clusters.

@TanELLclassroom Wonderful opportunity. I've heard Vancouver is lovely. I'll keep you in the loop.

@JamesDykman I was running EAL PD in Vancouver, James. So sorry about that. Next time?

Thanks for sharing this great example of #swi and #translanguaging in action while Ss make meaning of the world.

#swi #ELLSAPD #wordinquiry @HuntingEnglish Some ad hoc SWI work can be done as soon as children show interest in words, e.g. KG1 stage. My child wanted to know what colour 'aquamarine' is and I used Russian words 'аквариум' and 'море' originating from Latin to let her guess.
English

@DashBuka For sure, the tick marks means we have proven our hypothesis that they are affixes (prefix or suffix) with at least three examples of it in use. Kids of love to build! And, meaning-making-structure makes sense.
English

@JamesDykman Thanks for sharing. I will definitely try your idea of introducing #SWI through LEGO blocks with my #KS1 students.
