@El_VP_WGT The older I get the less I understand weird loyalties folks have to genre. Country music is a marketing term, no more and no less. The only two types of music that actually exist are good music and bad music, and in my estimation the new Sturgill is good music.

I’ve been seeing a lot of arguing about the new Johnny Blue skies album and people not liking it because it doesn’t fit into the normal country envelope…
I didn’t enjoy his prior album “passage du desir” I had my opinions, however I didn’t let that take away from my overall opinion of Sturgill, I just didn’t listen to the album or buy it on vinyl
Music should be experimental and not fit the existing box, if every album was “meta modern” it would get boring after # 3, hell even the outlaws changed it up and tried different styles
Listen to what you want but don’t hate somebody for trying to make new sounds

@westernjaguar I wish the app had a button where I could send them a little thumbs up or hug emoji, let em know I appreciate it!

@gmoneyy1984 Bud if you care more about the genre/marketing than the music, then you're kinda just being a mark. Country music has always been a term defined by suits in Nashville and no one, not listeners and especially not musicians, owe it any loyalty.
English

@JamesGedda Yeah. Country music. And no he never went Chris Gaines Johnny Blue Sky and changed his name either.

You know who actively pushed against the burden of rigid tropes and expectations that come with country music as a genre and fought tooth and nail to make the music he wanted to make, regardless of stylistic conventions & how suits wanted to market it?

Some now hates me or my opinions but I can't stand how a great Country artist quits one of the most beautiful music genres in the world like Sturgill Simpson it's been doing through the years. I'm listening to this gem and thinking it beats all Sturgill's recordings one by one.

A question for the songwriters/independent artists on here: What’s the saddest song you’ve released?

Usually around 100 gigs a year between 2 and 4 hours, plus practicing and writing. So that comes to... too many and not enough at the same time.
Western Jaguar@westernjaguar
How many hours a year do you spend making music?
English

@westernjaguar I have pretty stupid ears, especially for my own stuff, so the finer points of mixing beyond just 'which take sounds better' I tend to leave to my exponentially more intelligent friends actually doing the mixing.
English

@Smuphy Someone asked for this one a few weeks ago and I was embarrassed to realize I'd forgotten it. Need to relearn it! Thanks for the spin bud.
