Let’s not lose sight of the fact that the inheritance tax on family farms was a by-product of the “£22bn black hole” that didn’t exist. This was a disingenuous political decision based on a lie by Rachel Reeves that has caused huge financial peril for thousands of farmers.

Chancellor spoke of wanting the UK to be “the best place to start up, scale up and stay” and said that “growth begins with the spark of an entrepreneur”. She promised that “if you build here, Britain will back you”. What a word salad of total rubbish everyone is leaving or pulling back investment!

It is truly one of the great wonders of the world that in the UK, government employees failed to improve their own productivity AT ALL during the period when the internet, the mobile phone, email, e-commerce etc etc were becoming ever more efficient. Staggering achievement.

It is one of the great scandals of our time. Drax, which generates electricity by burning trees imported as pellets from North America, is more expensive than gas, more polluting than coal and more dependent on imports than oil. Yet it is, incredibly, designated as ‘sustainable biomass’, pocketed £870m in subsidies last year and will likely trouser another 2 billion subsidies over the next four years – all to allow Ed ‘The Zealot’ Miliband to include Drax in his net zero calculations. Not just a scandal but an expensive scandal for the taxpayer.
