Anyone with open eyes can recognize that the bigotry, intolerance, and contempt for democratic values on parts of the far left are no less odious than what we see on the far right. This toxic extremism from both ends of the political spectrum is tearing at the fabric of our society. Americans of good faith, across every background and belief, should reject both poles of this politics of division and commit to the harder and more necessary work of rebuilding a shared commitment to truth, accountability, civility, mutual respect, pluralism, and democratic norms. As we approach our 250th birthday, the real test of our character is not whether we win against one another, but whether we can come together around the values that made this country worth building in the first place. Building a more perfect union and a stronger democracy requires continuous effort. Doing so is all of our responsibility.

I am a Democrat. I served in the Clinton administration. I did not vote for Donald Trump and am highly unlikely to support him or his acolytes in the future. I also have serious disagreements with many of the Trump administration’s domestic and foreign policies. But it is profoundly disturbing that a growing segment of the far left appears to be almost rooting for Hamas, Hezbollah, the Iranian regime, and other forces fundamentally opposed to the United States and our allies. This seems to reflects a corrosive strain of anti-Americanism, dressed up in postcolonial theory, that risks blinding us to the moral realities of our world and the nature of our adversaries.

Just to be clear: are you arguing that the regime that slaughtered 30K of its own citizens in recent months alone, raced toward nuclear weapons, green-lit the 10/7 Hamas massacre, sustained Assad’s torture chambers, murdered and maimed thousands of US soldiers, and carried out terrorist attacks in Argentina and across the globe were the moderates—and that we’re worse off now that many are being neutralized?

Larijani’s replacement will be appointed by IRGC. With every assassination U.S. and Israel engineering greater radicalization of Iran’s leadership. It will makes for a bleak future for Iran, Iranians, the region and ultimately makes it far more difficult for U.S. to disentangle itself from endless conflict in the region.

@sama @laurenap_ We will still very much need brilliant humans, including brilliant human coders, even in the coming age. The opportunity for us will be to let machines do what machines do best and for us humans to do the many things we will continue to do far better than our machines.

I have so much gratitude to people who wrote extremely complex software character-by-character. It already feels difficult to remember how much effort it really took. Thank you for getting us to this point.

Open Letter to Those in Hollywood Who Said "Free Palestine" But Never Said #FreeIran We have watched you. We have listened to every word. At podiums bathed in a billion lights, you declared "Free Palestine." The crowd roared. You felt righteous. You felt brave. But you said nothing about Iran. Nothing about Mahsa Amini, beaten to death by morality police for a strand of hair escaping her hijab. Nothing about the teenage girls shot in the streets for dancing. Nothing about the poets hanged at dawn, the dissidents tortured in Evin Prison, the 40,000 souls reportedly massacred when a regime decided its own people were the enemy. Nothing about the mothers arrested for weeping too loudly at their children's funerals. You vowed not to work with anyone who "justifies genocide." So let me ask you directly: Will you refuse to work with anyone who funds Hamas? Because the Islamic Republic of Iran does exactly that. It arms Hamas. It funded the October 7 massacre — the single deadliest day for Jewish people since the Holocaust — when 1,200 men, women, and children were slaughtered and taken hostage. Iran's regime did not weep for those children. It celebrated. And you said nothing. You called Israel's self-defense a "genocide" — Israel, a democracy where 20% of citizens are Arab, where Arab men and women sit in the Knesset, a country the size of New Jersey that has extended more peace offers than history has recorded acceptances. Meanwhile, in Iran, a regime hangs gay men from cranes. It executes Christians for apostasy. It poisons schoolgirls with gas to deny them education. It has murdered tens of thousands of its own citizens — not collateral damage, targeted killing — with a bureaucratic efficiency that should make every self-proclaimed human rights advocate on earth scream. Where is your open letter for them? Where is your award-show moment for the 90 million Iranians suffocating under a boot the world has agreed, by its silence, to ignore? I'll tell you what is happening, and I say it not with contempt but with grief: it is easy to condemn Israel. It comes with applause. It earns you the standing ovation, the social media adulation, the warm embrace of circles that have decided the Jewish state is the world's one acceptable villain. It costs you nothing. Saying #FreeIran costs you something. It means confronting a regime your silence has helped legitimize. It means standing with people whose suffering has no fashionable hashtag, no viral aesthetic, no coalition of celebrities amplifying their pain. The FBI documented a 400% rise in antisemitic incidents since October 7 — synagogues vandalized, Jewish children harassed in schools, people beaten on city streets for wearing a Star of David. Words like genocide, genocide, genocide do not exist in a vacuum. They land in a world already primed to hate, and they hand that hatred a moral permission slip. So I am asking you — as someone who refuses to let selective outrage masquerade as conscience — to do better. Say #FreeIran. Say it without waiting for applause. Say it for Mahsa. Say it for the teenagers in Evin. Say it for the 90 million people who wake up every morning in a cage their government built while the world's moral celebrities looked the other way. You told us you believe in peace. Then believe in it for everyone. Because a conscience activated only for approved victims is not a conscience at all. It is a performance. And unlike your films, this performance has a body count. With unflinching honesty- Dr. Afshine Emrani Humanist. The son of Iran. A voice that will not be quiet.

Great conversation. We might even one day recognize that our AI systems--which have the potential to do harm--also have the potential to become tools of loving grace. In our new book (coming April 21), a human (me) and an AI (GPT-5) team up to recast the Ten Commandments based on a comprehensive analysis of all of human recorded history, including our various religious, spiritual, moral, and ethical traditions. The product we produced is by nearly all accounts deeply human, humane, and inspiring.

Here's a question I asked GPT-5: "Drawing from the full spectrum of human history including philosophy, religion, spiritual teachings, indigenous wisdom, and humanist traditions, what are the ten most fundamental rules that, if sincerely followed by all people, would most likely create the highest levels of love, peace, mutual respect, and justice across humanity?" Its response was so thoughtful and beautiful, I decided to write a book about it. It's coming out April 21 and GPT-5 will be the named co-author. This will be the first time in human history an AI and a human have co-authored a major work of trade nonfiction, but it will certainly not be the last. Donald Trump is absolutely correct that America needs allies to effectively wage its war in Iran. In fact, we need allies to do most everything effectively in the international arena.

One last thought. The Ten Commandments were written for a world without electricity, printing presses, or the internet. We are entering the age of artificial intelligence. Maybe it’s time to rethink the moral operating system for humanity.

On April 21, GPT-5 and I will release our co-authored book, The AI Ten Commandments: A New Moral Code for Humanity. We teamed up to recast the Ten Commandments based on a comprehensive analysis of all of human recorded history, including our various religious, spiritual, moral, and ethical traditions. The product we produced is by nearly all accounts far more human, humane, and inspiring than most any of our our individual traditions. In advance of the launch of the book, I fed the full text into GPT-5 and asked it to come up with an optimal X thread. Below is the result.
