So while Andy Burnham was basically single-handedly raising Manchester’s productivity (from the 70s-2017 it was a disaster), the Reform candidate for Makerfield was… wanking over Countdown? Just not a serious party.

When Labour has a success it’s downplayed and there are attempts to discredit. We have lots more to do. Facts 👇

Lots of tweets from the Chronically Online Right about emigration rising… aren’t these the guys who want net migration to fall? I don’t expect people commenting on politics to be the next coming of von Neumann, but come on 🤣

@landofangle Burnham demands quota system for the National League North: it's just not right that we've got Brackley and Hereford taking spots that by right belong to Northern teams.

Burnham on the English football pyramid: I think if we could bring that to politics, to devolution, this country would be in a much better place.

Andy Burnham has worked in (at least) five different jobs throughout his career, impressing in all of them, with each being a rise on the previous. Meanwhile the likely Reform candidate for Makerfield has worked a grand total of... two public sector jobs? Get serious.

Genuinely think the ideal first step of deyankification when Andy Burnham becomes PM would be to de-tarmac city centre roads and replace them with paved streets. Even Peter Hitchens agrees! Sensible centrism for the win…

The Makerfield election is NOT about Reform or Restore. It is not about Rupert Lowe or Nigel Farage. It is about who takes over the leadership of the Labour party. Is it Andy Burnham, who has promised a pivot back to the left. This includes abolishing the ILR changes that are going through at the moment, making the boriswave wait 5 more years before being eligible for citizenship. Five more years of having to qualify for visas, at a higher bar than they initially entered with. Or can Kier, or one of his allies stay on, and the ILR reforms stay. This by-election will single handedly decide if hundreds of thousands of people are allowed to remain in the country and become citizens. Viewed like this, Makerfield is possibly THE most important election for the RW since Brexit. Keeping Burnham out is all that matters. Restore should speak to Reform in private, come to a bespoke, temporary agreement, and ultimately keep their powder dry.

As the imperial and political capital embroils itself in yet another crisis, its hold over the peripheries declines yet further. From Ballymena to Inverness to Newport, the sound of the of the old master’s weakening is turning from a mutter to a roar.

Long read in @spectator today ✍️ 💥 Those crucial hours on Monday evening - and how a lamb korma stiffened the PM’s resolve 💥 Streeting allies furious - branding him the Poplar Prigozhin. 💥 Burnham’s chances - “a regional accent probably boosts you by 2-3% tops” top pollster

A Labour backbencher texts: “We think Keir’s got the numbers on the NEC. But put it this way, it’s like <historical analogy that doesn’t make any sense> crossed with <forgettable scene from The Thick Of It>.”

@Itsneverasbad Pretty sure Burnham will just set the auction price of bonds lower than that.

A fusion of Burham’s supply-side Manchesterism with Dengist pro-growth corporatism would basically make 2029 unwinnable for Reform. The public are crying out for it, ffs.

Both governed local regions before moving on to the top job. Big on public investment for growth. Forerunners of using a new technological medium to connect with voters (radio and twitter) Pragmatic instead of ideological. Is Andy Burnham our FDR??

So a guy in another country, supposedly rewarded Farage £5million for campaigning for Brexit, but it was also for his security? Am I getting that right? 🤔🤔🤔
