Andy Burnham has worked in (at least) five different jobs throughout his career, impressing in all of them, with each being a rise on the previous. Meanwhile the likely Reform candidate for Makerfield has worked a grand total of... two public sector jobs? Get serious.

Genuinely think the ideal first step of deyankification when Andy Burnham becomes PM would be to de-tarmac city centre roads and replace them with paved streets. Even Peter Hitchens agrees! Sensible centrism for the win…

The Makerfield election is NOT about Reform or Restore. It is not about Rupert Lowe or Nigel Farage. It is about who takes over the leadership of the Labour party. Is it Andy Burnham, who has promised a pivot back to the left. This includes abolishing the ILR changes that are going through at the moment, making the boriswave wait 5 more years before being eligible for citizenship. Five more years of having to qualify for visas, at a higher bar than they initially entered with. Or can Kier, or one of his allies stay on, and the ILR reforms stay. This by-election will single handedly decide if hundreds of thousands of people are allowed to remain in the country and become citizens. Viewed like this, Makerfield is possibly THE most important election for the RW since Brexit. Keeping Burnham out is all that matters. Restore should speak to Reform in private, come to a bespoke, temporary agreement, and ultimately keep their powder dry.

As the imperial and political capital embroils itself in yet another crisis, its hold over the peripheries declines yet further. From Ballymena to Inverness to Newport, the sound of the of the old master’s weakening is turning from a mutter to a roar.

Burnham would bring a wrecking ball to ILR reforms and allow millions of Boriswavers to settle, it would be a complete disaster if Restore ran a candidate here.
