How many elephants can you count? During his morning patrol over Tsavo, pilot Roan tallied more than 150 elephants in this herd. It’s a sign of the times: When food and water are plentiful, elephants can aggregate in great numbers without putting too much stress on the landscape. This ecosystem is home to Kenya’s biggest population of elephants. Spanning 50,000 square kilometres, it is prime elephant country. While Tsavo’s elephants enjoy themselves, we will be patrolling overhead and on the ground, working to keep them safe. Learn more and support our conservation work: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org

Snorkels at the ready, its bath time at Umani. Thanks to the rains, puddles have grown into swimming pools and the mudbath is deep enough for a dip. Not everyone is a fan of the recent wet weather though: Amali flat out refused to come out of her overnight stable one morning until it had brightened up! We share more stories from our orphan herd in our Keepers' Diaries, hand-written by the orphans' caregivers daily: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/keepers-diaries

Every morning, our Keepers walk out with the herd. Why? Because even though these orphans are starting to hear the call of the wild, they haven't entirely found their feet. A burst of antelope through the bush or unintentionally rousing some sleeping buffalo can give our big babies a fright – and when that happens, our Keepers are there to restore calm and order. For the newest herd members – new arrivals like Toto, Natibu and Mwinzi – these walks build familiarity with a landscape that will one day be entirely their own. When that day comes, they'll no longer need our Keepers, though the bonds remain. Until then, our guardians in khaki continue to stand sentinel over the herd. Ex-orphan Manda's recent visit goes to show that these walks are pivotal to a successful reintegration – and help ensure the orphans remember the path back home whenever they want: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/news/updates/m…

Many of you are wondering how Korbessa handled Toto, Natibu, and Mwinzi’s graduation to Ithumba, especially given her close relationship with Toto. We are happy to report that she is absolutely fine! Korbessa has lots to keep her busy at Kaluku: a whole herd to lord over, a tiny orphan to nanny, and her new bestie, Lamuu, to hang out with. Elephants are incredibly intelligent creatures and we really believe that the orphans understand what graduations are all about. There is usually an adjustment period after a move, but only a brief one: the orphans seem to know that their friends are okay and have just moved on to a new phase. She's far from lonely but, if you'd like to join Korbessa's family, there is always space for new members. Find out how you can adopt her at: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/orphans/korbes…

Day three of life at their new Ithumba home and Mwinzi, Toto and Natibu ended their adventures with a rainy stroll home. Guess who was leading the charge? None other than the three newbies who are settling in beautifully. Mwinzi is being his usual implacable self, Natibu is already sizing up the rest of the herd, and Toto is leaning on his Keepers as he takes it all in. When they are ready, they will reclaim their place in the wild. This graduation to Ithumba marks the next chapter in that journey, one that will continue to unfold over the coming years.

Taroha has developed a new habit: he finishes his first milk bottle and puts it down normally. He finishes his second – and walks away with it clasped in his trunk. When a Keeper tries to get it back, he runs! His enthusiasm is the same as it was in May 2024 (listen for that rumble at the end!). Taroha came to us by way of a JCB bucket. He had been found alone on the shores of Lake Jipe and it was the only vehicle rescuers had access to at the time. By the time he arrived at our Nairobi Nursery, his journey had included an overnight stay at our Voi Unit and a flight aboard an aeroplane. But he was safe, and with his new family: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/orphans/taroha

This was a special treatment. A little elephant was just a week into the world when her mother was struck by a spear. Her injuries can put the whole family in peril, but fortunately, we were there to answer the call. As reported by our SWT/KWS Mara Mobile Vet Unit: “This afternoon, Elephant Aware alerted us to an elephant cow with her little, week-old calf. The mother had a spear injury on her hind leg. We mobilised a treatment and darted her, while her calf remained by her side. Given her baby’s young age, she did not need to be sedated, but all present agreed to minimal contact with her. The mother’s spear wound was deep but had not caused irreversible damage. We thoroughly cleaned and disinfected the site before administering antibiotics and green clay. With treatment complete, we reversed the patient. She got up with her calf by her side. Both walked off to rejoin their herd, who were waiting in the nearby bushes. Dr Aminga has given her a good prognosis for a complete recovery.” Learn more about our Mobile Vet Unit, operated in partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/projects/veter… (to date, they have attended to 4,007 elephant cases!)

Home – the place where everything begins. On Earth Day, we celebrate our extraordinary home and all the wonderful, wild creatures with whom we share it. For Earth isn't ours alone – it is one shared home for all life. Yet human actions are placing unprecedented strain on our planet, destroying habitats and endangering creatures big and small. We may be the driving force behind the challenge, but we can also be the solution. Here in Kenya, we work to make our corner of the world a stronger, safer place for all creatures. The news can be disheartening, and we cannot turn our backs on the havoc we are wreaking. Still, we see cause for optimism – animals beating the odds to survive, species returning from the brink, entire habitats regenerating. Our planet is resilient. Every living being deserves a safe place to call home – and Mother Earth can provide that, if we allow her to. Thank you, our supporters, for helping us protect it. If you are in a position to give, please donate in honour of Earth Day: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/donate

When an orphan chooses life, we know they've turned a corner. And behind this choice is often a Keeper. They are the reason orphaned elephants heal – not just physically, but in the ways that matter most. Elephants are extraordinary readers of people. They know who they can trust, and they do not forget. In fact, we often say it is the elephants who are in charge of hiring our Keepers. When they give 'the nod', we know they've signed off. Keeper Joseph was originally part of our Canine Unit, but we soon discovered he had a natural gift with elephants. Kaikai agrees. You can support an orphan by adopting. Wait for it… Busara has her own mic drop moment. Her name means ‘wise’ in Swahili – a fitting moniker for a little elephant who has already overcome so much. Orphaned during the height of a drought, Busara was at death’s door when she arrived at our Voi Unit. We placed her in a quiet stockade and immediately administered drips. For many hours, she didn’t even have the strength to lift her head. Today, she’s fully recovered, with the strength to lift her own bottle to feed herself! Discover more about her recovery, which was made possible by supporters like you, who funded IV drips, specialist milk and Keeper care: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/orphans/busara

Over the weekend, we rescued this little zebra from a pit and reunited him with his family. It started when our SWT/KWS Tsavo Mobile Vet Unit received reports of a foal who had fallen inside a hole along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway. He had no hope of getting out on his own, but fortunately, his herd was still nearby. The team reported to the scene, pulled the little zebra to safety, gave him a thorough health check, and successfully reunited him with his mother. A little life saved and a wild family kept together. In partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service, our Mobile Vet Units operate in key ecosystems across Kenya. To date, they have attended to over 14,300 patients. Every animal saved, every family preserved, is made possible because of supporters like you.
