The story follows Nnu Ego, a beautiful and determined Igbo woman. From childhood, she is raised to believe that a woman’s ultimate worth and joy come from marriage and, especially, bearing many children (particularly sons).
Nnu Ego moves from her village to Lagos after marriage. Life in the city brings huge challenges: poverty, polygamy, her husband’s long absences (he works as a servant for a white family), and the clash between traditional Igbo values and colonial/modern influences.
The novel traces her lifelong struggle — sacrificing everything for her children while navigating a changing Nigeria. The title is deeply ironic, as the story questions whether motherhood truly brings the “joys” society promises.

🔋🚨 𝗗𝗜𝗗 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗞𝗡𝗢𝗪: The ball for the 2026 World Cup needs to be plugged in and charged before kick off.
• The balls have a sensor that tracks its precise location every time that it's touched.
• For the 2022 World Cup, the sensor hanged in wires inside the ball, but now it's part of one of the balls panels.
• The data is paired with 12 cameras around the stadiums to track the precise location of the ball and every player 50 times every second.
• This data is transmitted live to VAR, and will be used to determine goal line technology and offsides.
• The sensor is extremely lightweight, unnoticeable for the players, and the battery lasts for up to 6 hours.
