Today, the United States Supreme Court delivered a historic and long-overdue victory for equal protection under the law by striking down key provisions of the Voting Rights Act that have long imposed artificial racial quotas and distorted our electoral maps.
We applaud the Justices for rejecting the race-based mandates that forced states like Georgia to prioritize racial gerrymandering over compact districts that respect communities of interest, traditional boundaries, and the principle of color-blind justice enshrined in our Constitution.
For too long, the VRA’s outdated and unconstitutional requirements have prevented Georgia from drawing fair maps that truly reflect the will of our voters. With this decision, we are finally freed from those artificial constraints.
The Georgia Republican Party calls on the General Assembly to convene a special redistricting session as soon as practicable to redraw Georgia’s Congressional, State House, and State Senate districts. These new maps must prioritize traditional redistricting principles—contiguity, compactness, respect for political subdivisions, and communities of interest—without the distorting influence of racial targets.
Georgians deserve districts that unite neighbors, preserve local communities, and ensure every vote counts equally. We stand ready to support swift action that advances fair representation and upholds the equal protection guarantees of the 14th Amendment.
This is a win for democracy, the rule of law, and all Georgians.
