BIP 110 is about to boost attention for ordinals dramatically. The low down: Miners have until 1st of September to signal support for a soft fork that would limit data storage on Bitcoin Currently only 3% of mining hash power indicates support for BIP 110 and at least 55% of mining hash power needs to show support for the soft fork to be accepted The impact If successful, existing ordinals would be unaffected, but new minting and inscribed may be limited. Thus the supply of Ordinals will effectively be temporarily capped for at least 1 year If unsuccessful, then the ordinals ecosystem will carry on as it is now. Incentives The reasons BIP 110 is unlikely to success is because Bitcoin and Ordinals have aligned incentives in nearly every way If Ordinals are not in demand then Bitcoin is largely unaffected If Ordinals are in demand then Bitcoin miners benefit from additional transaction fee revenue We all know that Bitcoin's Block Reward decreases every halving and will eventually go to zero This means that transaction revenues will have to completely replace the Block Reward in order to keep the Bitcoin network secure and the supply capped at 21M There is no guarantee that transaction revenues will be enough to replace the Block Reward to keep the Bitcoin network secure enough to avoid attack and to keep the supply capped at 21M even with ordinals It is the biggest uncertainty for Bitcoin and no-one has a definite answer Bitcoin needs every source of revenue possible Ordinals, despite being just 3 years old, has provided roughly 7000BTC in fees to miners which is around 12% of the total fee revenue of Bitcoin Current Picture Bitcoin is currently in a bear market and is trading at uncomfortable levels for many miners already Asking them to voluntarily cut revenue and revenue sources further seems like wishful thinking But all of this will undoubtably lead to more attention for Ordinals And if BIP 110 fails it will set a great narrative for the next Bitcoin bull cycle for Ordinals
