It's a great magazine so go buy it and support @thebigissue sellers and while you're at it, go buy Vidya's book #thedaystoppledover too - a tender, moving and thrilling story set between Sydney and Bengaluru.

I will always regret not speaking more, speaking louder about Palestine, about justice. I will NEVER regret speaking of Palestine. ✊🏽

@elias_greig Nothing funds capitalism like a nuclear family. Most advertising targets kids to keep economies afloat. Communal set ups rely on each other, repairs, re-uses - not that straightforward I know, but by god what a lie we are sold in the pursuit of individualism & self-sufficiency.

@jenniferdown I think for a lot of us url (with its capacity & reach & ridiculous instantaneousness) took over the irl relations and community (which are slow & considered and need *actual* negotiation). This onlineness has truly robbed us (just my feeling & probably not new for many).

The slow revelation of inhumanity in the people who walk around us, work with us and who we count(ed) as friends is one of the most sinister parts of the last eleven months. I can’t believe I was ever alone in a room with some of you.

“I question this idea of nationality. There’s no longer the old conception of the Australian novel i.e. Tim Winton or Kate Grenville. The novel is plastic and changes and has different empathies.” – Brian Castro #liminalfestival

TFW you've moved to Australia, built a life, you pay tax and do good deeds and even say 'what a wanker' to describe someone you think is actually being quite reasonable, then you want to bring your aging parents to take care of them and you see the processing time of 31 years.

How much quicker they are to express their condemnation & send their best wishes to a man with a slight ear injury than thousands of kids with arms, legs, & half their faces blasted off willfully, deliberately, & repeatedly.

@Library_Vic Once again, it’s worth reiterating that our writing workshops had nothing to do with the genocide in Palestine; it’s worth reiterating that the Library has lied to us all for months, and did so by invoking child safety and an arbitrary review process as cover for this censorship.

@vidyarrrr My god! It’s the most complete phrase to say and comes so naturally (having grown up in India and being educated in Hyderabad and Lucknow) after uttering a wish and Mashallah too (so appropriate and perfect).

@anniezaidi Oh yes! One absolutely has to, cz it is insidious & sticky. I feel my age also has something to do with the cognition of this terrible lens I mentioned. Im glad though, of being aware, but it's a constant fighting off one has to do. Keen to know how the opposite is impacting you.

@JasmeetSahi One has to guard against that lens. For me, a bit of opposite is happening though it's been just over two years away. I'm also now looking at the West with Indian eyes (historic Indian lens?). Maybe being older & seeing the worst of both worlds emerge has something to do with it

One thing I'll say for long term travel or studying abroad for a few years - you really learn to appreciate your own national wealth. I have never before been so sharply aware of how culturally rich just the state of Uttar Pradesh is (or even just the city of Bombay/Mumbai) +

@vidyarrrr Yup, Ive been feeling so uncomfortable at how easily this hate is aired, and many in the diaspora are still unbothered and that too is a feature (not a bug)
