Today, 24 April, is the traditional feast day of St Mellitus, one of the earliest missionaries to Anglo-Saxon England. Sent by Pope Gregory the Great in 601 AD as part of the Gregorian Mission, he became the first Bishop of London and baptised King Sæberht of Essex, helping establish the foundations of St Paul’s. After exile for refusing communion to unbaptised pagan princes, he returned and later became the third Archbishop of Canterbury. He died on 24 April 624 AD. St Mellitus played a key role in laying the spiritual foundations of Christian England. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
