WITHOUT REMORSE by Tom Clancy was published on this day in 1993. I had been eagerly awaiting its release since learning that it would be a John Clark origin story – how John Terrence Kelly became John Clark. I already had my sights set on the SEAL Teams and had been an admirer of Tom Clancy since THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER which I read in 1985, a year after it hit shelves. When former Navy SEAL John Clark appeared in 1988’s THE CARDINAL OF THE KREMLIN, I wanted to know all about him. His ever-increasing presence in CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER and THE SUM OF ALL FEARS only stoked my interest into the origin story of one of the most iconic characters in the genre. Like many who read it upon publication, I had visions of specific actors and directors bringing WITHOUT REMORSE to the screen. I would later find out that the legendary Big John Milius had been attached to direct a film adaptation of WITHOUT REMORSE in the mid-90s and that Keanu Reeves had been approached to star as John Clark. Milius and Clancy had become friends working on the film adaptation of THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER and, later, on the film adaptation of CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER, and they frequently connected via phone to discuss military history. Imagine a John Milius WITHOUT REMORSE screenplay being directed by the big man himself. What might have been… Who do you think would have been a good choice to portray John Clark back in the 1993, 1994, 1995 timeframe?
