@hhekas1 @VigilantFox It’s a lie because it implies improvement where there is none. Students aren’t getting better at reading by 4th grade; they’re just only testing those who’ve proven to be good at reading the previous year (and held back those who failed).

@JasonFebery @VigilantFox How is this a lie. If you didn’t pass third grade you don’t go to 4th, that seems like a very logical way to do it so the actually learn what to do for 4th grade

@VigilantFox It would also be good to see how the reading levels of students held back a year fare — i.e. do they catch up? This would be a compelling case for holding them back. Unfortunately, the data doesn’t show this.

@VigilantFox Essentially, they are only testing those who proved the previous year to be good readers. A better measure would be to test all students at a given age, to prevent ‘hiding’ the bad readers from the numbers by keeping them in a lower grade level.
