These are among the major sins in Islam, and Islamic teachings prescribe severe consequences for them in this life and the next. What the scholar was explaining is something different: the seriousness of abandoning prayer in Islam. Prayer is not merely a religious ritual. It is the direct connection between a human being and Allah. For this reason prayer is the second pillar of Islam after belief in Allah. Allah says in the Qur’an ﴿Indeed prayer restrains from immorality and wrongdoing﴾ Qur’an 29:45 Prayer reminds a believer of Allah five times a day. It constantly brings a person back to accountability, reflection, and moral awareness. Because of its importance, Islam emphasizes prayer so strongly that it is never waived under any circumstance. A Muslim prays in health and in illness. A Muslim prays while traveling and while at home. A Muslim even prays during war. Allah says about prayer during battle ﴿And when you are among them and lead them in prayer let a group of them stand with you﴾ Qur’an 4:102 This is known as the prayer of fear, where soldiers pray even on the battlefield. Even in severe illness prayer is not abandoned. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said “Pray standing. If you cannot, then sitting. If you cannot, then lying on your side.” Sahih al-Bukhari This shows how central prayer is in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also explained that the first deed a person will be judged for on the Day of Judgment is prayer. He said “The first thing a servant will be judged for on the Day of Resurrection is his prayer. If it is sound, he will succeed and prosper. If it is corrupt, he will fail and lose.” Tirmidhi Because of this, scholars say that prayer is the measure of a person’s relationship with Allah, since it reflects whether a person maintains that connection with their Creator. Therefore the scholar’s point was not to defend criminals. Rather, he was emphasizing how serious abandoning prayer is in Islamic belief, because prayer is the spiritual link between a human being and Allah. Prayer constantly reminds a person of Allah, restrains them from wrongdoing, and connects them to moral responsibility. For this reason early Muslim scholars often said that whoever preserves their prayer preserves their faith, and whoever neglects it risks losing their spiritual direction. So the statement is not about praising criminals. It is about explaining the central place of prayer in Islam and why maintaining the connection between the servant and Allah is considered fundamental in the faith.
