I think the zig to rust port with an LLM is one of the more ideal uses of an LLM. I assume it would excel at this for its literally the purpose of an LLM.

Bun moved from Zig to Rust. Total Rust victory. I've been tracking the move to Rust in the JS ecosystem since 2021. It's actually wild. I updated my post earlier this year, but so much has happened since. Here's my 2026 update below (bun was still in the oven here).

re ur 2nd reply: this matches what we did on pgrust mostly. 96% of 50k pg regression tests passing (though we were also rearchitecting to be multi-threaded instead of process). Are you considering any big changes now that you're already rewriting everything? github.com/malisper/pgrust

fun fact: the initial version of what became bun was a line-for-line port of esbuild’s transpiler from go to zig. this was pre-LLM and it took me 3 weeks for it to sort of work

@ASU Q: Libraries? The testcase issue is also why this project focuses on libraries. Every program dependent on a library can serve as a testcase for that library, helping us port, but it's hard to get that many testcases (especially UI/UX ones) for normal applications.
