Because it's on fire. He'd be inheriting a squad that's had the fitness coached out of them and be considered a failure if he took it on and got dumped out of both cups (which we will anyway).

Think it works if Alonso is the long-term aim. Gerrard for 7 games, then stepping back onto the coaching staff.
