Some news: My screenplay adapted from Kate Kruimink's historical novel A Treacherous Country has won the top prize at the Byron Bay Film Festival in Australia. I'm gobsmacked. filmink.com.au/public-notice/…

The evergreen challenge of the time-saving device is that it saves the time of your boss, of that spammer or enterprising crook, of the enemy (or stranger) who now feels free to bombard you. It saves the time of 5 billion or so others, not all concerned with your welfare.

but some biographies are indeed works of art-- biographical art. for instance, Richard Ellmann's great biographies.
Ted Iacobuzio@TedIacobuzio

@JoyceCarolOates Hugh Kenner wrote that expecting biography to do the job of the work of art is to be Aesop's dog, which drops the bone in the water in an attempt to get its reflection.

The headline is slightly misleading with its emphasis on lawyers and scientists.

Attention fellow travelers! Down in Mississippi's old Oxford Town on 3/25 I'll be interviewing Steven Jenkins from the Dylan Center about some remarkable never-seen-before live footage ranging from '66 to the Rolling Thunder Review. It's gonna be a corker. wl.eventim.us/event/stepping…

@RasberryRazz @JayDeeWriting Also want to point out that Jack Haley Jr. directed Norwood, in which Joe Namath and Glen Campbell astonishingly turn Charles Portis’s dialogue dull, and Dom Deluise as Bill Bird outacts them both.

Thirty years ago today, I attended the book party for Infinite Jest. Just after Dave’s death I wrote about the party — and about editing a story of his for Tennis magazine — in a blog post on @mcsweeneys along with contributions from Dave Eggers, @mattbucher and others).

Young Frenchman Arthur Fils, in only his 3d tournament back after a serious back injury, rides his big game into the Doha final with a 6-4 7-6 (4) victory over Jakub Mensik. Can feel the desire in every point from Fils Fils vs Alcaraz for the title #getty #atp #tennis

@nate_knapp24 @RMartinBoulder And I wonder if the bucolic name allowed him to slide through. Can’t confirm the history but I heard that my elementary school Forest Park was originally Forrest Park. And Rick, I don’t remember that bio at Williams, but I do remember reading Fail-Safe in 6th grade. Terrifying!

@RMartinBoulder @JayJenni Sometimes, in terms of the role he played in the war, I wonder if Forrest’s reputation might be the single most romanticized (and fictional in relation to what he actually ‘accomplished’) of any American figure.

The South is a strange place. Where else in the world can one spend the afternoon reading about a man responsible for trafficking upwards of 10,000 people—who even sold his own son—& then get in one’s car and take a road named after that same man? Only in America!

@alexheard I found Jane Gross's A Bittersweet Season very helpful as I was undertaking (!) my father's care. (When he was 86, I moved into the same apartment complex with him, and he lived another 10 years.) I'm happy to have a conversation with you about this topic if you want.

Hi, a broad question: Are you aware of any books that look at the U.S. system of eldercare—assisted living, nursing homes, etc.—with a combination of deep reporting and research *and* good writing? Because I would like to read it if it exists. Thanks for your help!

I have also been inspired by his relatively late start in what became his long career and his astonishing work ethic. Now, as I get my own late start in film, his work remains a touchstone. Time to stream another retrospective. RIP and thank you. 5/FIN

In 1984, I was living in Dallas , teaching high school English, trying to write, and spending lonely weekends watching films. At the city's USA Film Festival that spring, I saw regional premieres of Blood Simple and Spinal Tap and a Frederick Wiseman retrospective. In 1984! 1/
