@shyam_lab novel (according to Google) /ˈnɒv(ə)l/ adjective: novel interestingly new or unusual. "he hit on a novel idea to solve his financial problems" I like the example given here since 'novel' idea/technology/methods can solve existing problems.

First stab: novel=substantially different from what’s been done before. Included in this definition: using old technology in a new way. Not novel: using new technology in an unimaginative way and learning nothing. Open to other definitions. But novel should not mean fashionable…

As a physicist who switched to biology ~20 years ago, I still don’t understand what the word “novel” means. I see incremental papers on trendy topics in prestigious journals, and genuinely creative/important work in “lower” journals. Hypothesis: novel=fashionable. Falsifiable?

7 years ago someone brought this bottle to a home party, it was left unopened so I put it on my office desk and I promised to open it only when my paper was going to be accepted. Well…time to see if this thing has turned into vinegar because GUESS WHAT, PAPER ACCEPTED🎉🥳🎊🍾!!!

Hearty congrats to @bbbranjan et al. on the #DUBStepR paper! New paradigm for #FeatureSelection in #SingleCell data: using gene-gene correlations and a measure of cell clumping to identify a better gene set for clustering #scRNAseq and #scATACseq. w/ Prof. Leong Khai Pang.
Bobby Ranjan@bbbranjan

Delighted to announce that #DUBStepR, my main project over the last 3 years at @astar_gis, has finally been published in @NatureComms !! Thanks to @shyam_lab and all co-authors for their support! Please find the #tweetorial below :) nature.com/articles/s4146…

Single-cell 5'end RNA-Seq detects gene expression and enhancer activity in one single assay with no extra cost. Adding an additional layer on existing 10x 5'end data for free: all you need is the software bioRxiv: bit.ly/3fGcaMY GitHub: bit.ly/39HoyZb

For this weekend's project I created a graph based probability simulator. Pretty cool... now if only I could find a use case.

Looking forward to hosting this session as part of the #ISSCRDigital program together @JayShin. We will explore how dry+wetlab tools that are hugely increasing the throughput we can test different cellular perturbations with and discuss how they can be best used going forwards...
ISSCR@ISSCR

Our newest #ISSCRDigital program focuses on the latest developments in the rapidly advancing field of computational #stemcell biology. Registration is now open for this 3-part series! @OwenRackham @JayShin @morris_lab @mincle @cahanLab @PZandstra isscr.org/meetings-event…
