Deputy Bybee and our JCSO Drone Unit joined Scout Pack 847 for First Responder Night at Waterstone Church, and things took an unexpected turn. What started as a drone demonstration quickly became a full-on drone dance party. Safe to say the Drone Unit understood the assignment. Thank you to Scout Pack 847 for the invitation and for a fun evening with the community.

We’re incredibly proud to share that Jeffcom 911 honored JCSO Deputy Hammetter as Law Responder of the Year during the sixth annual Jeffcom 911 awards celebration. He was selected for this award because of the courage and decisive action he showed during the active shooter incident at Evergreen High School on September 10, 2025. As the first law enforcement officer on scene, Deputy Hammetter was faced with an armed suspect who had already injured students. Without knowing when backup would arrive, he made the decision to move toward the threat and act immediately to protect others. He put the safety of students, staff, and the Evergreen community ahead of his own, and his bravery and sound judgment helped prevent the situation from becoming even worse. This recognition speaks to the kind of service Deputy Hammetter brings to this job and to this community. We’re grateful for his courage, proud to have him at JCSO, and honored to see him recognized in this way. Please join us in congratulating him on this well-deserved award. @jeffcom911co

Cookies for Our Hometown Heroes We were honored to be selected as Hometown Heroes by Girl Scout Troop 66533 from Lukas Elementary in Westminster. The troop donated 94 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to our Office of Emergency Management through the Hometown Heroes program, which helps girls learn philanthropy and community service through the cookie program. Thank you to Troop 66533 for your generosity and for thinking of our team. We plan for a lot of things, but 94 boxes of cookies was an especially welcome development.

Please join us in congratulating Sergeant Colton Pocsik on his promotion, recognized by Sheriff Marinelli and Undersheriff Prange on April 15. Sergeant Pocsik has distinguished himself through exceptional leadership, professionalism, and a strong commitment to the mission of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. His dedication to service and high standard of excellence continue to strengthen our agency and the community we serve. His connection to JCSO also runs deep. His mother previously served with the Sheriff’s Office, and his father currently serves as a commander in Detentions. That legacy of service makes this promotion especially meaningful. We are grateful for Sergeant Pocsik’s continued service and proud to see him step into this leadership role. Congratulations, Sergeant Pocsik.

Major Drug Bust and Arrest for Drug Task Force The West Metro Drug Task Force (WMDTF) has made a significant arrest and drug seizure after a months-long investigation. Investigators tracked the suspect, 25-year-old Hunter Covelli, to Walworth County, Wisconsin, where he turned himself in yesterday. Covelli is being held on 35 counts including nine level one drug felonies, seven level two drug felonies, and nine level three drug felonies for possession with intent to distribute. Additionally, he faces eight charges of illegal possession of a weapon and two misdemeanors for unlawful possession of a controlled substance. Covelli will be extradited back to Jefferson County for court proceedings. In November of 2025, the WMDTF received an anonymous tip that Covelli was dealing drugs in the city of Wheat Ridge, selling large quantities of cocaine, MDMA, ketamine, and LSD. The WMDTF began an investigation to confirm the suspected behavior and ultimately arranged several purchases between Covelli and an undercover detective. In January, a search warrant on Covelli’s home led to the seizure of the following: 60 lbs. crystalline MDMA 11,000 2CB pills 100 lbs. psychedelic mushrooms 55 grams ketamine 31,000 MDMA pills 40 grams cocaine 60,000 LSD tablets 8 firearms 18 LSD liquid vials 1 pill press 13,000 MDA pills The West Metro Drug Task Force is a collaborative, multi-agency effort that brings together investigators from Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Golden, Lakewood, and Wheat Ridge Police Departments. The task force focuses on reducing the presence of illegal drugs within the community by investigating drug trafficking organizations, distribution networks, and illegal marijuana operations, with an emphasis on identifying and sanctioning those responsible for supplying controlled substances.

Wanted: One Raccoon. Found: One Clingy Woodpecker. It’s National Animal Control Officer Appreciation Week, and our JCSO Animal Control Officers continue to prove that no two calls are ever the same. This one started as a reported raccoon but turned out to be a woodpecker who then hitched a ride and declared the responding officer its personal tree. After plenty of laughs, the woodpecker eventually moved along and found a more suitable tree of its own. We’re proud of our Animal Control Officers for handling every call with professionalism, patience, and a sense of humor, because in this line of work, even the wildlife likes to keep things interesting.

This week, we’re proud to recognize National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week and thank the incredible dispatchers at Jeffcom 911. Today, we had breakfast burritos delivered as a small thank you for the big work they do every day. Dispatchers are the 'first' first responders, answering calls in moments of chaos, gathering critical information, calming callers, coordinating resources, and helping get the right help to the right place fast. A special thank you to Adrianne, Kimberly, and Bridget, who are taking calls for us today. To all of the dispatchers at Jeffcom 911, thank you for your steady voices, quick thinking, and lifesaving work you provide every single day. You help bring order to emergencies, support responders in the field, and make a difference in some of the hardest moments people will ever face. @jeffcom911co

A Growing Concern in Jefferson County: Not Every “E-Bike” Is Legally an E-Bike The Sheriff's Office is seeing a sharp increase in young riders using electric vehicles that may look like e-bikes but are actually much more powerful. Many of these vehicles are marketed online as “e-bikes,” but once you check the specs, they exceed the 750-watt legal limit and are classified as motor vehicles under Colorado law. The concern is not legal e-bikes. It is e-motos, high-powered electric motorcycles disguised as bicycles. Some manufacturers even add non-functional pedals to make them appear compliant. In reality, these vehicles often have motors ranging from 1,000 to 6,000+ watts and can reach speeds of 30 to 65+ mph. What parents should know before buying: • If the motor is over 750 watts, it is not a legal e-bike in Colorado • 750W to 4,476W vehicles may be classified as low-power electric vehicles and require a driver’s license, insurance, and registration • Vehicles over 4,476W are classified as motorcycles and require a motorcycle endorsement, plus licensing, insurance, and registration • Riders can face fines, and unregistered vehicles may be impounded • Adults who knowingly allow, aid, or encourage a minor to illegally operate a vehicle may face criminal charges, including Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor, a class 1 misdemeanor Not every “e-bike” is actually an e-bike. Before you buy, check the wattage and know what the law requires. For more information on e-bikes and electric vehicles: jeffcosheriffco.gov/safety/e-bikes
