@RealTimeWWII Thank you so much. I have found your posts to be fascinating. As the son of an American History prof (and WWII vet), I thought I knew a lot about the war, but every week it seemed that you revealed events I had never heard of. Now I am going to have to read a bunch of books!

The Second World War is over.
In the last six years, perhaps 85 million people have been killed by fighting, starvation, disease, bombing, & deliberate mass murder. Three-quarters of them were civilians. 3% of the planet's population has died.

Stalin blandly tells Truman he's glad to hear of a new bomb & hopes that the Americans will use it against the Japanese. Thanks to Communist-sympathising spies in the Manhattan Project, Stalin knew of the atomic bomb before Truman did.

At the conference of the "Big Three" Allied powers in Potsdam, President Truman tells Josef Stalin that USA possesses "a new weapon of unusual destructive force". Truman doesn't say that new bomb harnesses atomic fission & is capable of devastating an entire city.

* On the same flight from Seattle to Chicago as Kenley Jansen. One of us was in first class. The other was in 18A with a kid kicking the seat behind him.
* Tornado warnings in Chicago. One touched down near O'Hare shortly after the plane landed.

Houston Oilers coach Jerry Glanville, quarterbacks coach June Jones, and defensive backs coach Nick Saban circa 1989. Saban went on to a fair amount of success at the University of Alabama. 😉

@JamesFallows Non-elite colleges such as the one where I teach will gladly accept the highly qualified minority students that elite colleges will now reject. In truth, we need more college students of all kinds in the US. Colleges are fighting over a shrinking pool of high school grads.
