The South Downs and Beachy Head, East Sussex, were settings in Jefferies' spiritual autobiography 'The Story of My Heart' (1883). After he had left his native Wiltshire, these spaces took him away from civilization and closer to undisturbed countryside.

The man in the sketch is Harold Adams. He founded the Richard Jefferies Society, and worked in the Parks department in the town, mostly in the Town Gardens. He would have known and loved the tree that is now the latest sculpture of Jefferies. 🥰
