Carl Trueman (in Crisis of Confidence) argues that Paul presents to Timothy the qualification to teach, not to be a teacher. That sounds small, but it’s not, because the teacher’s task is to draw attention to what is taught, not to himself. That means this qualification isn’t about presence or personality, but about understanding doctrine and articulating it clearly.

@JeffreyPerry09 I hope that wasn’t Trueman’s point, that teachers draw attention to themselves. Apt to teach presupposes sound doctrine and the ability to communicate it. That has nothing to do with drawing attention to oneself, but it does mean that one must be a teacher of the Word.

Creeds and confessions remind us that God will bring all things to a conclusion in which the marriage of the Lamb will take place, and they help us to know how to think, live, and worship in the interim. Carl Trueman

Tradition is not the issue; it is how one defines that tradition and how one understands the way it connects to Scripture that are really the points at issue. Carl Trueman

The recitation of a creed in a worship service is one of the most countercultural things that Christians can do. It is an act of defiance, if not even of actual revolution. Carl Trueman

Ironically, it is not the confessionalists but the “no creed but the Bible” people who exalt their creeds above Scripture. Carl Trueman

They that are coming to Jesus Christ are often times heartily afraid that Jesus Christ will not receive them. This observation is implied in the text. I gather it from the largeness and openness of the promise: “I will in no wise cast out.” For this word, “in no wise,” cuts the throat of all objections; and it was dropped by the Lord Jesus for that very end; and to help the faith that is mixed with unbelief. But I am a great sinner, say you. “I will in no wise cast out,” says Christ. But I am an old sinner, say you. “I will in no wise cast out,” says Christ. But I am a hard-hearted sinner, say you. “I will in no wise cast out,” says Christ. But I am a backsliding sinner, say you. “I will in no wise cast out,” says Christ. But I have served Satan all my days, say you. “I will in no wise cast out,” says Christ. But I have sinned against light, say you. “I will in no wise cast out,” says Christ. But I have sinned against mercy, say you. “I will in no wise cast out,” says Christ. But I have no good thing to bring with me, say you. “I will in no wise cast out,” says Christ. To you, Christ says, "Whoever comes to me, I will never cast out." (John 6:37) - John Bunyan

@JeffreyPerry09 If my righteousness is as filthy rags, what would my holiness be like. Trying to add anything to Christ would only taint HIS image. He must increase, but I must decrease.

If you will add our active holiness to Christ’s, it is no other than sacrilege, for you steal and take from Christ what you put to your own obedience. Robert Towne

Although the exact origins of the Celtic Cross remain uncertain, some believe that Patrick created the symbol. The Celtic Cross features a circle around the center of a traditional Christian cross, often described as a halo or circle of light. Some suggest the circle may have been used as a point of contact with pagan symbolism, helping communicate the gospel in a way his hearers could understand. Although Patrick is often reduced to legend, the real Patrick is far more compelling than the stories. Patrick was a Briton who was captured by Irish raiders as a teenager and taken into slavery. During those years of isolation, he testifies in his Confession (biography) that he was brought to repentance and faith. What began as judgment became, in his own words, the means by which God drew him to Himself. After escaping and returning home, Patrick later experienced what he understood to be a divine call to return to Ireland, not as a missionary. He willingly returned to the place of his suffering to proclaim the gospel to those who had once enslaved him. It was there that he preached Christ crucified and risen, calling pagans to repentance and faith. Historically, Patrick’s work contributed to the spread of Christianity throughout Ireland. The church has long marked certain days to remember faithful witnesses, not to elevate them above others, but to give thanks for the work of God in and through them, thus March 17 is set aside as St. Patrick’s Day, traditionally marking the date of Patrick’s death in the fifth century. We remember Patrick not because of myth, but because his life bears witness to the God that saves, sends, and sustains.

The Law of works is so enwrapped and entwined together that if a man lay hands on any, even the least link, he inevitably pulls the whole chain unto himself. Robert Towne, (Assursions of Grace, p.15)
