It’s crazy to think that defunding the police is seen as a radical idea. How about we call it combating crime? Police shot and killed over 1,000 unarmed individuals nationwide last year alone.

The U.S. has more people in jail awaiting their trial than anywhere else in the world. Over 500,000 people per year are held behind bars, before being convicted of any crime, despite the fact that less than 5% of arrests are for violent crimes.

Despite that, even when a video of police brutality is posted and shared, little has changed.

Blackness can be perceived as a weapon itself by police in America. Skin color has all too often become a justification for confusing a sandwich, a wallet, or a hairbrush for a gun.

Not letting go of the past robs you of opportunities in the present and will only leave you regretful in the future.
