You spent $20k on a booth. Why did only 5 people show up?
"If you aren't spending 10% of your budget on marketing that you're actually THERE, you're wasting your money." @AndrewStartups
3 hacks to 3X your conference ROI:
Hello Bar: Update your site to shout about your talk/booth.
LinkedIn Targeting: Segment your lead lists by industry + seniority.
Video Teasers: Record exactly what your talk is about and blast it to your targets.
Stop hoping for luck. Start engineering your attendance.

@nickgraynews Funny I was running the numbers on my book and I primarily made money as a speaker - as a result of the book! So those fees plus book sales drove around 40k plus in revenue. I too was on over 70 podcasts but none of them drove sales so your play by play is insightful. Thank you!

I self-published my book The 2-Hour Cocktail Party about 3.5 years ago
Here are some updates of how it has gone
1. First year profits were ~$60k. Second year was ~$30k. In total I think I have now sold over 25,000 copies
That means I have sold ~$500,000 of books which is so cool to think about! Wow
2. I tried a LOT of Amazon Ads strategies, hiring consultants to help, internal team managing, etc
But never felt like we really cracked it. Amazon Ads for my book definitely moved more book sales and hopefully I didn’t lose money. This deserves its own post because we spent SO MUCH time and energy trying to figure it out - sometimes had big wins, other times was losing money on the ads
3. I have mostly “forgotten” about my book over the past year. I've had other priorities (family stuff, new ventures) and just haven't promoted it much
4. But! I was surprised to learn that I still make around $1500 in profits from the book sales each month
5. I’d guess that 85% of sales come from Amazon (all books are printed via KDP), then other stuff like BookBaby and Audible and Spotify make up the remainder 15%
6. All of my books are printed on KDP and it costs me about $5.90 for each copy to print on demand. With a retail price of around $18 it means I make approx $5 profit from each paperback sale
7. I made this micro-site party.pro for all my book stuff. I put a lot of time and energy into that
8. The site still drives around 24,000 unique visitors per month mostly from SEO on random party stuff. But I have no idea if that translates to any book sales
9. I was on over 100 podcasts on tour for my book launch which was fun. I am thankful for everyone who had me on their show!
10. The best podcast I ever did was The Art of Manliness. By far that sold the most books and heard from the most listeners
11. Second best was all my mentions on My First Million, many thanks to Shaan and Sam for being big supporters of The 2-Hour Cocktail Party
12. One of my big goals with my book was to encourage 500 people to host their first meetup or happy hour. We did that! I am most proud of that
Overall I am amazed and happy to meet strangers at least once a month and they ask me to sign their book or take a selfie together
Writing my book and publishing it was one of the hardest, lowest ROI things I have ever done
But it is also one of the things that I am most proud of. I am truly proud of my book and all the parties and friendships and happy memories that it has created for others
You can find The 2-Hour Cocktail Party book on Amazon, Audible and Spotify (I'm the narrator!), Kindle, and almost everywhere else that books are sold online
