@BHNFT_SLT We've been thinking a lot recently about how best to help learn speech strategies (e.g. one or several, the importance of cognition, behaviour change) - anything to share from your experience of this aspect of strategy use?

“Stroke survivors are self-motivated to make meaningful change […] but clinicians often lack optimism when speaking to stroke survivors and discussing their goals.” To reduce secondary stroke risk, clinicians need to be more encouraging, said Dr Olive Lennon at #UKSF24.

Currently, 1 in 7 strokes are young stroke. But strokes in people under 55 are increasing at a higher rate than in older people… and the prognosis of stroke in younger patients is “not benign”. “Worrying change in epidemiology of younger stroke”. Linxin Li at #UKSF24.👆

Stroke survivor, Pippa Faunce-Smith, who has aphasia, outlined a few issues that damages the wellbeing of those in recovery. ▪️Feeling told off. ▪️Talked about. ▪️Not listened to. ▪️Not supported to communicate. “Notice the person, not just the deficit.” #UKSF24

At #UKSF24 Professor Gillian Mead spoke about bespoke palliative care for stroke patients. “Early discussions about likely outcome could be more direct. “Important to be open to what families are saying. “Even as a senior clinician, I still find these conversations difficult.”

@claudiadreads @RCSLT The #ICAP literature has some good group ideas, the #aphasia reading book groups too as well and what about a digital aphasia rehab (apps) group? (might also be worth a post on the "other platform" as growing aphasia community there...)
