Seven in 10 Americans in the latest PBS News/NPR/Marist poll say they'll watch Tuesday's presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump — the candidates' first and possibly only meeting of the 2024 race. It’s not that most voters will be swayed by the event, hosted by ABC News in Philadelphia. Two-thirds say the debate will have little to no effect on their vote for president. But close to a third say the debate will influence which candidate they choose a good or great amount. And the 14% of voters who say the debate will have a great impact includes several groups important to both campaigns, including 32% of Black voters, 24% of Latino voters and 21% of Gen Z/Millennials. “The stakes are really high for this debate,” Democratic strategist Ameshia Cross said. “For [Harris], the stakes are higher just because she has a much higher ceiling to clear than Donald Trump does in terms of expectations.” “If Kamala Harris or Donald Trump have a very bad debate performance that pushes swing voters one way or the other, in a very close race, it could make a difference," Republican strategist Kevin Madden said. to.pbs.org/3TrG2Qf

BREAKING: After announcing his departure from the 2024 presidential race Sunday, President Joe Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his replacement at the top of the Democratic ticket. "Today, I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this," Biden said in a post on X. The announcement came amid rising pressure from Democrats for Biden to exit the race over concerns about his age and ability to win against former President Donald Trump in November.

Nearly two-thirds of Americans say President Joe Biden does not have the mental fitness to serve as president, according to the latest PBS News/NPR/Marist poll, while about half question former President Donald Trump’s acuity. At the same time, a majority of Americans say Trump does not have the character to serve as president. In contrast, about half of Americans say Biden does has the right character to lead the nation. Overall, 59 percent of Americans think Trump will win the presidential race in November, including nearly all Republicans, a majority of independents and nearly a quarter of Democrats. (1/2)
