If you handle the abuse stoically — staying composed, functioning, keeping up appearances—people assume nothing was ever wrong. Your pain is invisible, and so is the abuse. But if the trauma catches up with you… if you break down, develop anxiety, depression, or PTSD—suddenly you look like the unstable one. And to outside observers, that just seems to confirm the narcissist’s narrative that you were the problem all along. This is how scapegoats are retraumatized by a world that misunderstands trauma—and how narcissists get away with it.
