The King's speech is worth watching. The NYT reported on "some ever-so-subtle rebuttals to Mr. Trump." They didn't sound that subtle to me. In America’s 250th year, a British monarch has become a figure of resistance to a monarch-like US president. youtube.com/watch?v=XJitc-…

He did it politely and diplomatically but King Charles just reminded Congress: • NATO was there for USA after 9/11 • British Troops did fight in Afghanistan • Ukraine needs our help now • executive power must be subject to checks & balances • ice-caps are melting • America’s natural wonders need protecting

The number of healthy life expectancy (HLE) years in the UK has fallen, according to a new report, to just under 61 for both men and women over the past decade. Prof Michael Marmot, who led the Strategic Review of Health Inequalities in England in 2010, reacts to the findings.

With the White House Correspondents Association declaring Donald Trump an “honoree” at tonight’s dinner, I declined an organization’s invitation to attend. The sane washing of Trump and his war on the press is dangerous. And the WHCA is an absolute disgrace. #WHCD

🚨 I am looking for a deputy editor to join me at Insight, the Sunday Times investigation team. You will be joining me, @ManuMidolo and @venetiamenzies on a great adventure as we try and tell stories that matter, in the most stylish and innovative way possible. There are lots of words, but this is the most important part of the job description. "You will be at home speaking to people from all walks of life - and have a natural curiosity, competitiveness and intensity that drives you towards the biggest and most important stories of the day. You will be hard-working and determined to make your years here the best of your career, thereby contributing to the success of Insight and the Sunday Times." If you think this might be you, please apply. newscareers.co.uk/vacancies/4362…
Gabriel Pogrund@Gabriel_Pogrund

Personal news: I am exceptionally honoured to be appointed editor of Insight, the Sunday Times investigations team. As part of the Sunday Times' commitment to investigative journalism, and storytelling in the written word, audio and video, I am also pleased to welcome two of the most talented and inspiring people I have worked with to a newly-expanded team. They are @ManuMidolo, currently investigations reporter, and @venetiamenzies, visual investigations editor. I will be hiring a deputy editor in due course. Our hope is keep the flame of Insight alive by producing fearless and forensic journalism - while delivering our stories in the most elegant and innovative way possible. The Sunday Times is the best place in the world for any journalist - but also any source. We have the resources, and integrity, to back the people who come to us 100%: if you have a complex, surprising, sensitive - but significant, story to tell, we are open for business. Insight, founded in 1961, pioneered investigative journalism in Britain, championing the voiceless — including, most famously, the victims of thalidomide — and revealing truths which the powerful hoped to suppress. It dismantled the government's narrative about Bloody Sunday, revealed the defection of Kim Philby, and exposed the nuclear plant at Dimona. More recently it has lifted the lid on FIFA corruption and the government's handling of the pandemic. I have been blessed to have had the paper's backing in combining investigative reporting on the summit of society — monarchy, MI5 and MI6, Downing St — with less glamorous stories ranging from the victims of funeral poverty in London to the abandonment of spouses in Pakistan. It has been the best experience any reporter could have hoped for - and I will draw on it as I try, to the best of my abilities, to maintain Insight's special traditions. I would also like to thank Ben Tayor, Krissi Murrison, Lindsay McIntosh, Becky Barrow and perhaps above all Pia Sarma for supporting me over the last decade. news.co.uk/latest-news/th…

The Israeli military’s killing of Amal Khalil, Al-Akhbar journalist in Lebanon, has provoked anger and despair in Lebanon, where people have been forced to contend, again and again, with the Israeli military’s chilling disregard for civilian lives. Since 2023, Israeli attacks have repeatedly killed journalists and paramedics in the course of their work. International investigations are urgently required. Not later, now.

Today marks 5 years since Folajimi ‘Jimi’ Olubunmi-Adewole, 20, died after heroically attempting to save a woman from drowning in the River Thames in what was described as an act of sheer bravery. Rest in peace Folajimi Olubunmi-Adewole 🙏🏾🕊️

Journalism is not a crime. The deliberate targeting of journalists is. Amal Khalil was killed on Wednesday doing what a journalist should, telling the story. At her funeral, no one we spoke to believed this wasn’t deliberate. Nor that Israel would ever be held accountable

Hundreds of people have gathered for the funeral of journalist Amal Khalil, who was killed in what Lebanon says was a targeted attack by Israel. Khalil was laid to rest in Lebanon as anger and sadness spilled onto the streets. Sky's @DiMagnaySky reports

Why should audiences care about the BBC cuts? Laura Davison, NUJ general secretary, said: "It's our BBC; it's a public service broadcaster - the clue is in the name. It belongs to us. There should be proper, transparent scrutiny of discussions between the BBC and the government about future funding."

Journalists are civilians. Killing us is a war crime. We wear blue vests with the word PRESS to mark us out. Yesterday I spoke to warcrime prosecutors at @Eurojust⁩ arguing these now make us targets & calling for action. Today another journo is dead thetimes.com/world/middle-e…

A final piece of advice from Holly Butcher - written the day before she passed away from cancer at just 27: “It’s a strange thing knowing you’re going to die young. At 26, I thought I had time… To fall in love. Start a family. Grow old. But cancer doesn’t care about plans. Now, I understand how fragile life really is. Every single day is a gift, not a guarantee. I’m not writing this to scare you. I’m writing to remind you: really live. Stop stressing over little things. Be kind to your body- move it, nourish it, stop criticizing it. One day you’ll wish you had appreciated it. Go outside. Look at the sky. Feel the sun. Just be. Spend less time chasing “stuff” - more time making memories. Don’t skip moments with people you love. Laugh more. Write a note. Tell someone you love them. Complain less. Give more. Helping others brings more joy than anything you can buy. Be present. Put your phone down. Show up - really show up. You don’t need to have it all figured out. You don’t need a perfect body, or a perfect life. Just follow what makes your heart light up. Say no to what drains you. Make changes when you need to. And please - donate blood. I wouldn’t have had that extra year without it. And that year gave me memories I’ll hold close… forever. Thank you for reading this. Live your life well. And maybe… we’ll meet again someday.” Holly 🩷 Repost & share Holly’s important advice. ❤️

The body of the Lebanese journalist Amal Khalil was found by rescuers after several hours of digging in the rubble after an Israeli strike. She is the fourth journalist to have been killed by Israeli forces in seven weeks. This is why the word ‘journacide’ is now being used.
