And brings with it new risks that schools need help tackling - particularly safeguarding as families send their children to live with minimal supervision in nearby towns to access a secondary school.

These kind of trends are too often forgotten when thinking about the future of education. The "rise of small-town Africa" is a huge opportunity for the growth of secondary education which is much more cost-efficient to deliver that way due to scale and teacher accessibility.

There's been lots of great stuff written about African megacities such as Lagos and Kinshasa But they miss something: the rise of small-town Africa My piece this week is about how the growth of second cities and towns is transforming the continent economist.com/middle-east-an…

So often we are asked to try new programmes out because they are cheap or "easy" and so often we have to give the unpopular answer that we just aren't prepared to distract school leaders if evidence shows it won't make a big enough difference to students.

Helpful guide to cost-effectiveness thinking - from an implementer's and government partner's perspective I particularly value the point David makes about what "distracts teams with limited operational capacity from programs that will deliver big impacts".

You’ve got an education program, and you’re confident that it’s having an impact. But is it worth the cost? cgdev.org/blog/cost-anal… Here are a few resources and cautions for cost-effectiveness analysis in education.

Hearing how @PEASchools deliver better learning outcomes, for poorer children, more cost-effectively than comparison secondary schools. Eval found cost per child is 27% lower. Truly, a “Smart Buy” @FCDOGEC @FCDOEducation #CIES2023

Such a relief to see Uganda announced as Ebola free today! After closing schools early to limit the spread, it's good news that all should be on track to open on time next month for hopefully the first non-disrupted year since 2019! monitor.co.ug/uganda/news/na…

It still surprises me how many otherwise well-informed people don't know just how huge (and growing) Africa's young population are, and what a massive opportunity it is for the world if they get the education they deserve.

#China age-cohort peaked in 1977 at 375M #India age-cohort peaked in 2008 at 385M Today, Sub-Saharan #Africa has 500M children from 0-14! The size and growth rate of such age-cohort is historically unprecedented. The solutions for Africa are in Africa! #EndLearningPoverty

As an extrovert one of my most hated tasks is reviewing a 50+ page doc. Still this parent quote made my day: "PEAS is about everyone whether intelligent or not, they believe no one is dull ... they feed them during lunch, so they pick anyone whether they passed or failed"

Sad news for Uganda. After one of the longest school closures in the world, schools are closing once more due to Ebola.
The Observer@observerug

#Ebola: Minister of Education Janet Museveni has ordered all #Uganda's pre-primary, primary & secondary schools to close for 3rd term holidays on Nov 25 - earlier than the Dec 9 schedule. Museveni says 23 children have been infected so far, of which 8 have died #education

And they are still walking miles to school. Still often only getting one meal a day - the free lunch PEAS provides. Still sitting on hard wooden benches for hours on end. And now facing exams that will determine their futures.

This time of year students across PEAS schools in Uganda and Zambia are sitting end of school exams. As every year, several of those students will be pregnant.
