@soft_servo Yeah I found it surprisingly sparse as well, but I had overall good experience with tinyik. I am a novice with robotics though so I am not sure how limited it is. I might fork tinyik to enhance it further.

@Jern123d I was looking for something like this! Surprised there's no good native implementation of IK or moveit2 in python

Inverse kinematics and path planning done! Codex basically one shotted this again. It's using ros2/moveit2 which does a lot of the heavy lifting and should generalize well to other embodiments. Will push to text-to-cad soon. Next step IRL assembly and testing!

@Jern123d what's the most complex thing you've built with build123d? Would love to see what is possible.

you should have to post proof of ownership of a casio fx991ex and at least one other dedicated calculator before discussing engineering on this website

@techMellouk @emm0sh They are using smithy.new here is a header from a STEP file exported from that website. They are running on latest OCCT as the kernel but beyond that I am not sure.

text to CAD was solved by *checks notes* the sheet metal company still in beta so be gentle but it is working surprisingly well so far for simple parts

@techMellouk @emm0sh Almost certainly nope -- just about any STEP file generated involving SCAD will be a tessellated nightmare

@emm0sh Interesting. Prompt -> LLM -> Scad code -> STEP, is this the pipeline?

@coelacanthstory No worries, I understand how difficult it can be to set up build123d. This is probably not for you but I also maintain build123d-portable to try and make install easier for most users. github.com/jdegenstein/bu…

No, LLMs are not going to replace software engineers. Here's why. I’ve dedicated my life to programming for more than two decades. Yes, keystroke by keystroke before LLMs, crazy, huh? 🤣 Today, I’d like to share my theory on why LLMs cannot replace software engineers.

@coelacanthstory Fair points, this is a result of baggage from our CAD kernel which has graphical components included in addition to the topological stuff. There are a few example nix flakes on github including github.com/niteria/nix-bu… Next rel of build123d will drop VTK, so that may help too.

for example despite being a python library that is basically a compiler it links against libx11 and libgl... something something professional accountability military tribunal punitive justice etc and so on. i'll probably just run it in a debian container

@emm0sh We were just talking about this yesterday. Users of build123d EXPECT they can put their designs into CI and export, test, release, etc automatically. Other proprietary software: "but how many license seats do you have open" 🤮.

to illustrate why the world is held back by engineering software (CAD, etc.): what would the world look like today if python were paywalled like matlab is, and there were no alternatives? apply that to everything we do and see the issue

@KowalczykRich @mferraro89 build123d + OCP CAD Viewer has some hybrid features. I am biased but the API of build123d scales a lot better with design complexity than CQ does. Here's a screenshot showing selecting stuff in GUI and using it in code. Note that it is (currently) brittle without TNP mitigation.

@mferraro89 Decent APIs? Perhaps. But true modern APIs designed as first class citizens? I will be excited if that is true. I’ll look at zoo and build123D. But I don’t want pure code-CAD. I’ve been doing cadquery based design, and it is even more painful than all the mouse clicking.
