ON THE “OFFICIAL” ANNOUNCEMENT OF RESUMPTION Broadcasts and posts have been flying over social media selling the “official” announcement of resumption by the school management without any circular signed by any principal official of the school. This is enough to discredit the announcement especially since none of the manufactured crisis borne out of the anti-student and anti-poor policies of the university management have been addressed. It would then seem that the essence of emphasizing the “officialness” of the social media broadcasts and posts would be to escape the question of how much of students concerns have been addressed. In this regard, the social media influencers or handles, be they students or not, that propagate such news do so with great peril to students’ interest since the management may have found veritable mouthpieces to avoid accountability. However, the consequences of the lingering policies which have proven to be inimical to the university community at large and debilitating to students in particular remain very real, in fact, they may have become worse given the high-handed 3-week school closure by the management. Beside the physical stress, mental strain and emotional despoliation that the tyrannical queues have caused which all students have experienced. There is the rising danger of increased rate of robberies off-campus which is a direct threat to students’ lives and property given the abrupt disruption of income of the transporters and the crippling of businesses in and around the campus. Then there are other inimical prospects that serve as ulterior motives for the management to maintain their incorrigible stance on the inhumane queues such as the opportunity to enforce arbitrary dress codes or impose “decent” dressing on students. To this category can be added the hike in ticket prices and multiple ticketing to which the Bamire administration and its partner in extortion Graftstimate company will like to include in the long list of internally generated revenues like the OAU water; OAU predegree and JUPEB programs to which there is zero accountability for the funds realized. This means there might be nothing stopping students from paying more than they would with town/igboro when moving from gate to different destinations on campus or within the campus in addition to the doubling or tripling of fares from gate to destinations off-campus. As earlier mentioned the 3-weeks of school closure may be interpreted as moving from frying pan to fire for students not only because those weeks have meaninglessly elongated the duration of our academic program but also because the management has not shown any body language to offset the time wasted by both the transportation crisis they manufactured and the 3-week school closure they imposed. Before the callous transportation scheme and other absurd policies like the eviction notice to students of Awolowo Hall Block 7&8 the choking academic calendar was already turning out mass failure in various departments and faculties even after substantial upgrades in results due to the incorrigible refusal of the management to insert extra weeks to the calendar to replace public holidays and breaks. Lecturers barely have ample time to cover the syllabus so they release materials during lecture-free week or exams while students have limited time to study and prepare for tests cum exams despite the Bamire administration’s abnormal 4-month sessional break. The consequence has been tests and practicals holding during lecture free week with lectures and field trips taking place after exams. How much more now that an enervating transportation scheme has been imposed. If at least 3 students lives were lost due to the combined rigours of adverse living and learning conditions; the absolute dysfunctional state of the health center and rising insecurity on and off the campus, how many more students will be lost due to the compounding effect of the chaotic transportation
