@JessPish Yep! And this same Sheriff has in the past complained of federal immigration agencies hiring his officers. There’s been long simmering tensions.

@Tyler_A_Harper @seanilling i would think 9 people being sent to prison for exercising their 1st and 2nd amendment rights is worth more commentary than a measly gun law riddled with exceptions.

For Women’s History Month, I want to recognize Kelly Davis, a journalist whose work reminds us why a free press is essential to democracy. Kelly built a reputation as one of San Diego’s most respected investigative reporters, focusing on the intersection of criminal justice, incarceration, mental health, and homelessness. Her work consistently centered the experiences of people too often ignored by powerful institutions. She is best known for the groundbreaking investigation “Dying Behind Bars,” which exposed the alarming rate of deaths in San Diego County jails. That reporting did more than inform the public — it triggered a state audit and helped lead to new California laws aimed at improving jail oversight and medical care. Kelly has also shown the courage required of investigative journalists. When San Diego County attempted to force her to turn over confidential reporting notes in litigation involving a jail death, she refused, defending the fundamental principle that journalists must be able to protect their sources. Her work has appeared in outlets including Voice of San Diego, The Appeal, The Intercept, The Guardian, and the San Diego Union-Tribune, and she was recognized as Journalist of the Year by the Society of Professional Journalists in 2023. A free society depends on reporters willing to ask difficult questions and shine light where institutions would prefer darkness. Kelly Davis has done exactly that for San Diego. #WomensHistoryMonth #FreedomOfThePress @sdut @kellylynndavis

Listen to this anonymous testimony from someone who had their loved one released from Elmwood County Jail to reunite with his family when ICE agents were waiting for him and detained him. He is 1 of 46 people kidnapped while being released from Elmwood. youtu.be/gaT8jJDFLIE

@daveweigel @dmtrubman @mattyglesias If you don't like ICE agents killing people in the streets, then perhaps listen to people who have been working in this space for decades instead of getting in a huff about not calling people "ex-cons."

@daveweigel @dmtrubman @mattyglesias If you want to pick apart the words people use (and have been using for like 15 years) then support substantive changes to help people get housing, employment, health care. 600K people leave prison each year. We put more people in prison than anywhere else in the world.

We got civilly married today. I’m grateful to live in a country in which my right to marry my wife has been recognized by the federal government as enshrined in our constitution. I am proud to raise our family within a society that recognizes and insists upon that legal right.

A reminder that the FBI’s most recent data (2024) shows over 94% of the 7.5 million arrests made by law enforcement agencies nationwide did not involve an alleged violent crime. Policing in the U.S. is overwhelmingly NOT focused on violent crime. cde.ucr.cjis.gov/LATEST/webapp/…

New data shows that over 86% of ICE arrests didn’t involve anyone accused or convicted of a violent crime. cc: @CBSNews
