Just wondering what the process is if a PM calls a general election when there are more than enough letters of no confidence to call a leadership election? Is his calling of the GE then withdrawn as he’s no longer leader. The odd state of it all.

@mrjamesob @EvanHD I feel utterly ashamed when I hear this. The Chief Secretary to the Treasury of our country literally doesn't know what she is talking about. Apart from anything else, she gets paid a ministerial salary to do this job. If I behaved like this in my job I'd be slaughtered.

One of the many extraordinary elements of this bonkers exchange is the modesty of @EvanHD. He is, by any measure, an economics whiz but because Trott is Chief Secretary to the Treasury he genuinely entertains the possibility that it might be *him* who is making an epic mistake.

The facts seem undeniable: 1) there was no threat to the cenotaph 2) some politicians cynically decided to say there was to stoke a culture war 3) their words activated far right thugs who committed large scale violence against the police. There must be accountability for this

Just finished @RoryStewartUK 's #politicsontheedge while it brings up bad memories of difficult times, it is so honest and upright it made me feel better, that there was someone who cared about public service among the grime of the populism that has ashamed us.
