Labels have taken over our recruiting world. I hear so many young soccer players saying they want to play “Power 4” when they probably can’t name a fraction of the schools that includes, or explain what it means. By the same token, there’s always been the “D1” label….thrown around on an even larger scale (when we all know the top D2 and D3 schools can compete with many D1). The players now feel the pressure of these labels…pressure from their clubs, pressure from social media and peers, and even pressure from their parents. Clubs and parents will vehemently deny, but the pressure does not have to be overt. When you see clubs continually posting how many of their players went “P4” and “D1”, you can’t tell me there’s no pressure. Words of advice to young players: You know how fast your HS years went by? Well, college will be even faster…maybe the fastest for years of your life. You’ll be at your 5yr or 10yr post college reunion in the blink of an eye, and no one will care whatsoever if you played P4 or D1, D3 or club soccer. No one will care if you ended up choosing a top tier college where you couldn’t play at all. As you go through your recruiting process, these are good things to think about. For the vast majority, soccer will be coming to an end in the next handful of years, at least on a competitive level. Done. Forever. And, you’ll have decades of your life to live, marriage, kids, grandkids…..My point is to keep perspective during your process, be open minded and look for a school and program you love with a great environment. Just because you can make a D1 team or P4 team doesn’t mean you’ll play. The higher the level, the less likely you play. Despite being a D1 coach, I am a huge proponent of the D3 world having spent time at that level. It’s become more and more competitive, and overall better opportunities for an “education” than so many in the D1 world. And remember, if your dream is to play professionally, that is determined by your talent and work more than who you play for. If you’re good, you’re good. There are so many examples of big time Pros in every sport who came from Junior Colleges, so don’t let anyone tell you that only a high level path takes you there. Try to chill on the labels and just go do you in your recruiting process. #NoMoreLabels #NCAASoccer #Recruiting
