This government has messed up again. Yesterday, Dangote Refinery moved to dollar pricing. Petrol now sells at $0.779 per litre. Diesel at $1.087. Jet fuel at $0.942. Every old naira invoice is now dead. Here's why this happened, in plain words. NNPCL has been selling Dangote more and more crude in dollars, not naira. But Dangote sells his fuel in naira. So he buys in dollars, sells in naira, and absorbs the exchange rate loss every single time. No business can survive that forever. So he switched to dollar pricing to protect himself. Now here's what it means for you. Your fuel price is no longer fixed. It moves with the dollar. Naira goes up, fuel gets cheaper. Naira crashes, fuel gets more expensive. Simple as that. And there's a bigger danger. Fuel marketers will now need more dollars to buy fuel. More demand for dollars means more pressure on the naira. That can push the naira down even further. It's a cycle. The naira-for-crude deal the government praised and everyone was rejoicing about in 2024 is now dead in practice. They let the dollar crude deals grow without fixing the mismatch. Dangote did what any smart business owner would do. He protected his money. This is not Dangote's fault. He built his business. He can price it however makes sense for him. This is the government's fault. They celebrated a win without building something strong enough to last. Your fuel price used to be a refinery decision. Now it's a currency decision. Watch the naira... That's your fuel price now.

If Nigeria were a country that truly celebrated excellence, these are the kinds of children our top celebrities, business leaders, and institutions should be rewarding with ₦10 million, ₦20 million, or even ₦30 million—not because they need charity, but because they deserve recognition and encouragement. Whenever we complain about the rise of mediocrity, we should first ask ourselves: What exactly are we celebrating? Whatever a society celebrates, it reinforces. Whatever it rewards, it encourages others to pursue. Imagine the impact if academically exceptional students received the same level of recognition as entertainers. It would inspire thousands of young people to take their education seriously because they would know that excellence is valued. Instead, someone can go viral on social media for shaking their body or creating controversial content, and within a few days, people from Abuja, Lagos, and other parts of the country will gift them tens of millions of naira. Meanwhile, a truly talented and brilliant young person achieves something remarkable, and hardly anyone pays attention. I even expected this story to be trending across the country. Sadly, even our government does not seem to celebrate intellectual excellence the way it celebrates sports and entertainment. They recognize athletes who represent the country, which is good, but why don't we give the same recognition to young people who represent Nigeria through academic excellence, innovation, and intelligence? If this boy had achieved the same feat in a country like the United States, his story would probably have gone viral. Universities, companies, foundations, and even celebrities would likely be competing to support him with scholarships and opportunities. So, to every intelligent young Nigerian: if you have the opportunity to study, work, or build your future abroad, don't hesitate to take it. Go where your talent is recognized, where excellence is rewarded, and where your potential can truly flourish. ✍️
